Hi everyone, I just recently purchased a 04 BEW TDI with 213k on the clock. I am looking to get the cam done as I know they usually have issues due to the wrong oil being used from manufacture. I heard good things about franko6 cam, but I am looking for a cheaper OE replacement. Does anyone have any recommendations on what cam to buy? Looking to spend around $700.00.
Thanks!

Welcome to the TDI Club XTMUnleashed ......

Maybe you should inspect your Cam! It's possible that the lobes are just fine at 213k miles!

I think I just wanna do it anyway for preventative maintenance! I got the car for a good deal so I don’t mind putting a little into it to make sure it has a long life ahead of it! Also previous owner used 5W30 the whole time he owned it. So I assume it’s cooked

Idparts.com is a good place to get a kit , I ordered one during the Black Friday sale at a good price as a preventative measure too for the 06 NB I picked up with 147,xxx miles on it with no history.

I installed a Cam for a BEW engine in a BRM Engine for a friend. Lots of photos with some narrative.

Another datapoint, I have a BHW passat with essentially the same cam profile as the BEW. Mine has the original cam in it, now at 650,000km - 400k miles.
I would inspect and go from there...

I'd recommend inspecting it, the bew doesn't wear out quite as quickly as the brm ones. I've seen plenty with over 300k miles on the original cam, but have also seen others with only 100k miles...
For non franko6 cam kits, I like the kit from Cascade German, they have the kit with the timing belt for about $700

does metal man of Marquette automotive also sell cams? He is the one I plan on having do my TB and Cam. Maybe I will just have him order me one.

Thanks for all the tips guys! I think I might just pull the valve cover off and inspect before I do anything drastic! I am in contact with Metalman of Marquette automotive for getting my TB done since he is close to me. I will inspect and if it needs to be done I will have him most likely order me the one that will be best for me and have him install while he is at it! DMF will be getting done this weekend since it is clanking pretty hard. Anyone have any other maintenance recommendations I should do for my 04 BEW?

Thanks!!

There are just too many to list....
My BEW has 226k miles on it, and I am 100% certain the cam is fine, and will still be fine when it hits 326k miles.

This BEW's cam is still fine, too:

Don't assume there is anything wrong with yours. Proper PM is all it takes, they'll easily last as long as most anyone would drive a car.

My history with PD cams (BEW and BHW) is that they are good for 200k miles. Not much different from the cams in the earlier VE engines of my TDI past.
Starting at about 175k they (all, VE and PD) began to show a 'wood grain' wear pattern on the valve lobes as successive 'layers' of hardening were worn through.

Get through enough thickness and you're into the unhardened, puppy-poop soft base that almost melts with use.
In full disclosure: None of my TDI were ever bought new. The oil that prior owners used is unknown to me.

Same with the new to me 06 NB…. No history of type of oil changed…. Also they serviced the DSG with incorrect fluid ( red type ) and the DMF came apart and flycutted the bell house to the point it punched a dime size hole in the case….
Causing the “RED “ fluid to come out. So I had ordered a new cam kit , because you know if I didn’t it would be bad……..along with a newer transmission, DMF and new TB kit.
Car only has 147,xxx miles on it😑
