Hi guys

I’m wondering which year 3.0 V6 TDI has the least amount of problems. I heard the 2011 (believe it’s CATA?) has the least amount of potential oil and coolant leaks etc; any truth to that? Or are the later revisions really much better? Or worse?

What about timing chain problems? Do all years suffer the same fate?

Thanks,
Elliott

The 1st gen 3L had more timing chains, more EGR coolers, more intake flaps, etc.
The 2nd gen 3L was improved in a number of areas and all those previously mentioned components were reduced.
I've seen both get north of 200k with proper care, and I've seen both tap out early or become a money pit.
A lot comes down to whatever servicing, maintenance or neglect is part of the equation.

Thank you! And do you know what years the 1st gen and 2nd gen were exactly? I’m guessing for example the engine that was in the 2014-2015 Q5 TDI is a 2nd gen. 2011 Touareg is a 1st gen?

Negative.
This should give you the "gist" of it....after that, you need to be specific about what you are asking.

The Q5s and A6s, A7s, Pannys, are all variations of one of these already covered by the above guides, typically adding different transmissions and options into the mix, but stripped down, they are very similar.
