Best way to know if my engine is toast.

My 97 AHU powered jetta blew an intermediate shaft seal, I then fixed the seal and did the timing belt and water pump while I was at it. Car fired right up and I drove back home from my farm. Next day car starts but has no power. Park it and then when I try to start it the next day to do some diagnosing it will only start for a couple seconds then won't run or try to start again.

Turns out the impeller on my turbo has completely snapped. So I believe it starts for a second then uses up the oxygen and won't go. (If this doesn't sound like the problem let me know)

I am wondering what is the best way to check if my engine is toast? before I order a new turbo.

I would try to see if any parts from your turbo went into the intake manifold. take the turbo off the car and examine the blades to see if any are missing also.

It would also be a good idea to inspect the intercooler for damage and clean it when you replace the turbo

If there's no metal in it, theres a good chance that your engine will be ok
