I am pretty sure they are, but is there a particular year? Of what I have seen the engine itself is the same it is just got part of the windshield over the engine and the asseories that bolt on the fenders and sides of the engine compartment are layed out differently to fit, but other than that the same.

Does the same year car have the same TDI motor?
__. That depends on what you mean by "the same TDI motor". Speaking hypothetically, if one car has a vacuum pump hanging off to the side and another car -- with an engine that's otherwise identical -- has the vacuum pump (same pump, same vacuum lines, everything the same but for a bracket) moved to the front because there are fender differences, then the parts book will list it as "a different engine".

__. In real life, you can call them the "same engine" -- you'd just have to switch that bracket if you moved one to the other but the VW parts book would say that they were different. Also, I guess that tthere's a chance you could run into a strange situation like one car can have the catalyst up nice and close to the engine and another one can't have the cat so close and has to have different ECM software -- thus making it "different".

__. I don't have any idea how these items apply to NB and Jetta but they apply to your question. Are you interested in swapping a motor from one into another????

No swap, just a battery question. My Jetta takes a 94r but the Beetle lists a 48-3 which is a less CCA battery. A co worker is having trouble starting her TDI Beetle with the smaller battery. I can't understand why the Beetle has a smaller battery. Thanks.

The battery is smaller because the engine compartment is smaller and a larger battery won't fit.

Make sure she has the correct battery- that means more than just the right size. Last year I bought a battery from Costco that fit, but had the wrong ratings. The CCA isn't too important, check out the amp hour rating. The Costco battery had no amp hour rate and it had difficulty starting the car in warm weather! I switched to a Dekka battery from Autobarn that has the correct amp hour rating and it works like a champ.

Search these forums, you will find quite a few discussions about the importance of using a correct battery.
