I’m looking for a solution for clamping down the battery. Sadly, the stock hold down clamp doesn’t fit my particular battery too well and it periodically lets go of the battery. Has anyone fashioned a hold-down or know of a suitable kit or method for strapping down the battery on these cars?

Check with a marine supply store - marine batteries often use straps for hold-down.
One may work for you, if you can thread it under the battery tray.

Universal hold downs or the correct battery.

21" may be a bit long but you get the idea.

Does VW even still sell an OEM battery for our cars?

I ultimately ended up running two nylon cinching straps to form a cross over the battery and under the battery tray. It’s holding well enough for me.

You buy your batteries from VW? Personally, I go by the best specs to warranty.

Iirc, there are only 3 companies who make all of the batteries, in the US... East Penn, Johnson Controls and Excide. All others are just rebranded batteries.

The only other I’m not sure about are Enersys, who I believe makes Odyssey... crazy specs and crazy prices. They get some rave reviews.
