Bang! Turbo Problems...

Goes the turbo.:(:(
I bought Speed185187's (Joe) TDI about a week ago, and was just pulling on to my street and gave it a little and heard a hellatious bang and the turbo sounded like a sand blaster (insert broken heart). Got home and there is turbo shrapnel sitting on top of the steering rack & oil all over the bulkhead, so it looks like its time to fix (upgrade) lol.

Well looked at it this morning and the turbo is in multiple pieces. Pics will follow when the surgery takes place.

Just ordered a new VNT17 from IDParts, should be here Friday. :D

Little update,

I got the intake & charge piping out, the exhaust mani is resting on the studs until I can get the rounded nuts off the DP.

Only carnage shot I got from last night:

I also found half of the turbine shaft & about half of the comp wheel.

/comfort That sucks. How many miles were on that turbo? I have seen another turbo that failed just like that one on here before, I don't remember what caused that it. Hopefully everything works out for you.

I believe it's still original with 186xxx, but I have a VNT17 en route and should have it tomorrow. I still have to pull the IC off and check for shrapnel, but I'm hoping it goes as smoothly as the rest of this process has.

I saw a couple spikes up to 33 PSI and  but I let off everytime I caught it, but for the couple of days prior to the failure I noticed a bit of lag at times and then other times it was overboosting by 12-14 PSI. Kinda hoping the vanes were sticking and I don't have to replace the N75 & vac hosing too, $1300 was a little bit more than I was looking to spend a week after ownership. lol

O.O 33psi on a vnt15, that's way to much boost! There might be something else going on. Hopefully the PO didn't do something stupid that is causing it to over boost so much. The lag and over boost could be from sticky vanes, how did the actuator look? Rust can really destroy them. Maybe someone else has some better input on what the problem could be.

I'm not sure as to what might have caused the overboost yet, the new turbo is getting delivered today so it should hopefully be in by late tonight and a test drive will be in order.

But here's another quick pic of what I found in the IC:

I pulled half of the turbine shaft and some scraps of the wheel out of the comp housing along with the "cone" of the comp wheel. What's the possibility that some of the comp wheel made it thru all the twists and turns of the charge side and into the intake?

I'd suggest you take the intercooler off and see if any bits come out or are stuck in the oil residue. Maybe clean it out. It's pretty painless to take the bumper off and pop out the intercooler, 7 screws and come clips iirc. I'm sure there is a DIY around for it.

Already done, I got the comp wheel pieces and about a cup of oil out of it. I ran water thru the cooler with a mix of violent shakes and got the water coming out clear without anymore shards so it's been leaning up against the wall for about 24 hours now drying out.

This is going to be the longest last 4 hours of work ever!! lol

Wow that sucks but at least you get to upgrade in the process!

Off topic: I hate the new formula Amp'd went to. Why did they change a good thing?

Just a theory: check/change your engine mounts ASAP.

I experienced this failure on my engine 3 times in a row (3 turbos, in about 2 months time.) The only thing I could figure is that my mounts were so sloppy that the engine jerking back and fourth "tugged" the head right off the turbocharger. No other explanation in my opinion but I haven't been able to confirm anything yet. Again, just a theory.

Well as of late Friday night the 17 is on and the car drives 100% different, almost as if the vanes were close to or completely stuck. Before I had a bit of boost lag then would see boost spikes of 25-33 PSI and now I see 22-23 lb spikes and it settles at 18 PSI.

Last picture I have for ya gents:

Yeah, I can't turn down an opportunity to upgrade when the moment arises. I didn't really notice a difference in taste I think they just ruined how the can looks. lol

I'm almost 100% leaning towards overspeeds what did the lil guy in, seeing 2x higher boost #s then it was built or mapped for.

Entirely possible, but my 3 failures happened at boost pressures within spec and when taking off from an idle (gently.) And my mounts were ragged out.

It's somewhat uncommon to see the compressor head divorce itself from the center housing, even though these failures have been showing up a lot recently..

Case 580 Super M,
Just found this thread.
I was the PO, it was the original turbo. I'm sorry this happened right after you got the car from me. :(
