Bad Smoke and Not Optimal Mileage

Hey guys I've got a question about smoke for you. My 02 TDI has always smoked upon start up as I thought to be normal. I tried the Powerservice additives along with Premium diesels to try to lower the amount, but with no luck. As winter turned to summer somehow the smoke became worse. I produce a nice cloud even on hot days even with PS added. Its the same way with a fast take off and I can't get my mpg above 45 mph no matter what I do. The car is stock besides a mufflerectomy(it smoked like this before this mod too) and also 40 psi tires. Any ideas would be great.

My does this too. Except I am getting even lower mileage then you. I sued to get 39-40 mpg 50/50 mix of normal driving cruising about 70 mph when I am on the highway. I just installed PP520 nozzles and now I down to about 36 mpg.

Intake clogged?

how many miles?

how much powerservice?

What RPMs do you drive around at?

What average cruising speed do you go?

need more info to address theproblem... muffler ain't gonna affect smoke mileage power or anything... 'cept noise...

Oh
the most important comment

What is the mechanical timing of the system? (read in vag-com basic settings block 000)

if the car is mechanically retarded you'll get more smoke at start up...

Unfortunately the only I have not checked is the timing. At the last central FL GTG I attended we couldn't get VAG-COM to long into my car and issue was never resolved.

Other important info.

Tires: Pirelli P3000(680 TW) 205/55R16 on Montreal I's

Another part of the problem is crapy fuel we have in central FL but there is nothing I can do about that.
Do 50% stop and go, and %50 highway

Also, you might replace the air and fuel filters. I was getting low-to-mid 40s in THICK urban metro traffic, but had neglected to swap my filters. Tires: 39 pounds. Vagcom timing reading: near-advance limit. Speed: 70 mph or below. Foot off accelerator whenever possible.

Penultimate tank: 48 mpg. Last tank: 50 mpg. Am giddy with joy
. Can't wait for the open road.

Chowder31 your car and driving habits are very similar to mine I have heard rumors that certian 2002's never got good mileage it may be that we are just unlucky.

In my 03 5 speed I get 40 around the city with a little highway included, that is driving somewhat conservativley. I had a 38 in Portland Or %90 city, 36 is not far from there. 5 speed right?

The mechanical timing is a little diffrent for every car and if it is on the retarded side of things you will get more smoke at start up, there was another thread recently where a guy had his come loose, according the the dealer. With my timing near the max advance I get notably less smoke at startup than with the timing in the middle of the graph.

You could try double dosing with Cetane boost additive, such as Stanadyne, Lubetec, or Amsoil, and/or Howes Meaner Power Kleener.
That will have the effect of advancing your "ignition" timing, and ought to reduce smoke.
Maybe worth a try, if your in the experimental it could tell you something, maybe.

With powerservice I am back up to 38 which still sucks I really need to get a vag-com and check everything but alas I have no money.

Drak, check the Vag-com list in the links above and PM someone near you for a timing check. Suggested cost: at least one six pack.

do the cage mod to your maf. my power was down, i had more smoke and mileage was slightly down. did the cage mod and everything is back to normal.alot of people overlook the maf in many situations. having the good working maf is key.
