Bad ECM?

Hello,
I been a a repair streak this year. ac compressor, condesor, timing belt, radiator and a whole bunch of others. I think I am having ECM issues now. So a little while ago upon taking the positive battery cable off. It touched the ecm releasing (zapped) stored energy. Since than a few extra codes been showing up. Misfire on 3, crank shaft senor, about 10 total. I just got done with replacing HPFP, injectors, crankshaft senor. Now the car will fire for 1 second and shut off. Have to turn key completely off or it just cranks non stop (or pull ecm relay) in order for it to fire for one second again. Right before i took it down to fix the HPFP it was in limp mode and and had metal shavings in the screen. plus the Transmission was shifting terribly

Now a couple month ago i did something really stupid...... I replaced the intake valve, and egr valve cause i had bad codes on them. the dumb part, i was unaware i had to hook up to vcds and adapt them. so now part of the 10 codes from above are about the soot on DPF filter and such. I have no want to replace them till i can get the car fired back up and running

Any thoughts if the ECM is the issue?

If the car is starting for 1 or 2 seconds, it could be an immobilizer issue.

If you buy a used ECM, you'll have to send the unit off to have the immobilizer bypassed or deleted by having the chip removed. Kerma offers this service.

A surge to the ECM could fry a trace or ROM chip. You could open the unit and check for burnt areas around the chips.

I would first check all of the outputs on your ECM, but that is a lengthy process.

I don't have a VAG, but I'd check the Ross-Tech forums as well.

I can see how this could be a immobilizer issue, but nothing comes up as security on the dash. I've seen it in the past when I tried to use a key that wasn't programmed correctly. But the car started longer for that. When I get home tonight after work. I'll pull apart the ecm. And post a couple pics

You can manually test the output, 1 by 1, on the ECM, or VAG can do it.

If you don't have VAG, then you'll have to do them 1 by 1... Lengthy process.

Just replaced the speed sensor, along with crank sensor

Am I using the correct timing kit? 2012 Jetta TDI. I feel like it isn't. But it's what I been using

If you've ever replaced your oil cooler or the oil cooler seal, then you basically already know how to do this job.

Yes, I just replaced that. Even replaced the connector. Yes I twisted the wires like the original one. Isn't that sensor tied to the RPM gauge? Cause I'm still getting the rpms showing up on gauge when cranking and when it starts.

It's the RPM sensor, yes. It's the easier of the two to fix. Run your VCDS again, check and see if it's getting signal, and then move on to the next one.

Yes. I'm stumped. Is there a way to check (aside from visually). For passable wire harness problems? I'm gonna start a post on that specific issue see what reply I can get.
So been reading, bad alternator can cause speed sensor issues, what's your thoughts on that? Currently I'm keeping the battery charged from the cranking by connecting it to my solar bank. It keeps it at 13.6 on a constant regardless how drained the bank is. (Diodes are involved). Thoughts on the alternator?

So IF you did clear the DTCs after your alleged fix, then the fix didn't solve anything.
Did you check wiring integrity between your fixed connection and the ECU plug? Run on overlay to bypass the harness?
Did you log the signal during cranking?

I don't like using the parts cannon as it gets spendy quite fast... but it would appear that you do, so go for it, throw an alternator at it.... it's still not going to start without RPM signal.

There was one spot that was questionable on the wiring harness. But was after the connection. Behind the oil filter, was vibrating enough to rub off all wrap. No visual issues with wire though. I put layer of felt and wrapped it up with heat automotive tape. Is there a way to test the wires beyond visually inspection. I keep seeing "use a voltmeter". But no steps on how.
I will hook it up tonight and get you the stats on cranking.

Man I really appreciate your help, I do. I know how to use a voltmeter, but my biggest problem is. There is three wires. What are the wires purpose, one ground? I am guessing one is continuous power, and one sends the signal back, but which is which??
So I'm not trying to be rude here. I don't live breath and eat TDI knowledge. This is my first car outside of owning trucks and foreign (all diesels btw) and I can fix them no problem. But if you were asking me questions in areas I excell at, I certainly wouldn't be posting smart ass ****. Again. Appreciate the help, but not everyone is as good as the next guy. Now if I was asking what the colors of the battery cables mean, than by all means. Post away ..

You need wiring diagrams so that you know where the wires go to. (read what ECU pins, etc)
Your first check it to make sure the wires aren't broken, especially from rubbing onto stuff

000801 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P0321 - 000 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

The wiring diagrams will also (more than likely) tell you where you can expect power, ground, etc. So armed with all that info, and the multimeter, you can validate the "harness". Now, if you can't validate it, you can easily run an overlay just to ensure that your new sensor & connector are fully functional and you get RPM signal.

So, is it safe to assume that you don't have Wiring Diagrams and are kind of just poking around in the dark at this stage?

Got one off Erwin website. Played around looking a bunch of things up while at work today. That is gonna be my next task with the car. Figuring the locations of those wires. Even if I have to temporarily jump them straight to the connector by bypassing the whole wire harness. I will do just that.

That's good... Now you know what pins at the sensor correspond with ECU pins so you can check wire continuity for starters.
