If I went out to my car and put a multimeter on my battery and it showed 12.1 I would put my battery charger on it and start checking things to see if I had a problem with the charging system. If the battery was several years old I would replace it. Obviously yours is new, take care of whatever it is that's causing a new battery to read 12.1 before you chase all these codes down some of which could be caused by a low battery.

With what you have described I'd say you have a crappy new alternator that needs replacement already.

This is a bummer of a thought and I smite you for saying. Lol..

frankly I just don’t think that’s it. The old alt provided zero charge letting the battery die which caused all the codes. Prior to replacement, there was no low power mode. It is now present after. The new alt at least provides charge. I have a battery charger with an alternator test setting. It says good alternator (said bad with with old alt) and I also dont have the battery light anymore. I do understand the voltages are not as they should be though. Tomorrow I’ll get after it some more.

Just don’t understand why, if the throttle actuator needed cleaning, why did it not present until the battery problem? Prior to the battery issue car ran great, no problems, happy as can be. Same with the other codes.

Again, thanks for all the tips and ideas.

Requiring cleaning was only a potential solution.... The plastic gears in its mechanism may have stripped, or the internal pot might've burned out, etc. Maybe it is partially blocked and with the old alt and low battery it didn't have enough grunt to break and now that it got full juice something busted..... We can throw all kinds of theories around or you can start doi g some actual troubleshooting and mechanical disassembly.

You certainly don’t mince words Turbo…. But you’re not wrong. I don’t love ripping cars apart so I like to think it all through so I don’t waste time and energy. I’ve developed a bias toward the problem being electrical so I’ve been hesitant to start pulling hard parts out. But it looks likely. Like I said, I’ll get after it tomorrow, after I whine some more…

Have you put your multimeter directly on the bolt at the back of the alternator where the big battery cable is fastened while the car is running? Doing that will tell you exactly how many volts the alternator is putting out. Whatever the reading at that bolt you should be getting the exact same reading at the other end of that cable where it connects to the battery.

If there is a difference then it could be a loose connection or degraded cable.

I asked about that above in #12.

I appreciate your effort to brainstorm the problem with those of us that are trying to help and guide you, but as I've mentioned in several replies, you haven't really done much other than hope and pray to fix or troubleshoot anything. You will end up kicking yourself once you clog up your DPF or whatever other headache you cause yourself by continuing to operate the vehicle under limp mode conditions.

Have you done output tests on the suspect valve?
If they failed, have you put a meter on the connector to see if it's getting signal or not?
Have you logged the IAT signal if it's throwing a code to see what it reads? A broken sensor or connection can sometimes just read high all the time... whatever the log says can provide very useful clues.

Also, something is fishy about all your codes. Your Freeze Frame Data shows the engine is not running and the vehicle isn't moving.... didn't you just say that you took it out for a drive and it re-generated all these codes after you cleared them?

So finally got the throttle valve actuator off the car. Didn't look too dirty at all. No crusty buildup, just some gunk on the sides. The connector is damaged a little so I just decided to order a new part to eliminate that problem. Replaced the "A" block fuse strip on the front of the eBox as well. Trying to get the MAP sensor off since I have a new one but that'll happen tomorrow.

Tested the connector to the throttle actuator valve and got 5v on pins 2,3,4. and less then 1v on pin 1. I may not have tested correctly but I put red lead on the pin and black to ground.

Once the new part gets here I'll put it back together and see what I get.

replaced the throttle body unit.... no change. Car still low power mode. same codes.

Tried to do output test on the MAP sensor... there seems to be no option to do so.

Throttle adaptation does nothing at all. No output, no sound from unit.

Visually inspected every fuse in the car....none blown

Visually inspected wiring that I was able to see and trace... nothing broken/loose/corroded/or falling apart.

Tried to test connector with multimeter, but frankly, I am unsure of the proper process to test a connector across the pins.

All other functions in car work fine...(lights, power stuff in the interior, windows.....)

Have you done output tests on the suspect valve
Cant find an option to do so for the MAP sensor

Your Freeze Frame Data shows the engine is not running and the vehicle isn't moving.... didn't you just say that you took it out for a drive and it re-generated all these codes after you cleared them?
Auto Scan done with the car not running/key on after taking for a drive. Would it show RPM when not running on the scan? Codes show up immediately after clearing/key off/key back on. The first engine code will return immediately after clearing before key off.

It's a sensor, it only takes measurements. You can log the readings it takes. You can't run an output test on something that can't be actuated like a motor, valve, switch, etc.

Auto Scan done with the car not running/key on after taking for a drive. Would it show RPM when not running on the scan? Codes show up immediately after clearing/key off/key back on. The first engine code will return immediately after clearing before key off.
Focus on FREEZE
It takes a SNAPSHOT of the parameters when the subject error first occurs.

Based on what you're saying, if you clear the codes and just cycle the ignition, without even going for a drive, they should all still come back.

Gotcha. Makes sense. Can anyone help me with testing the connectors to see if I am getting power to the unit? It’s a 4 pin…

I already tried to help you, but you're not reading eff all I'm posting....
Did you read post #23 that gives you the pinout?

Have you put your multimeter directly on the bolt at the back of the alternator where the big battery cable is fastened while the car is running?
The bolt on the alt shows 14.1v with red on that bolt and black lead on the neg batt term.
Across the battery, it shows 13.92. Is that a big enough discrepancy to cause the problems?

I am getting 4.8v when testing across pins 1 & 2 on the connector to the Throttle actuator valve. Wiring diagram shows pin 1 as grnd and pin 2 as going through the fuse (good) and on to the battery. Other two pins go to ECU. Should I be getting 12v at the connector? Or is the 5v correct? (Bentley manual wiring diagrams don't show voltage as Turbo's diagram does.) The part is brand new and is not making any sort of movement (i get the same codes whether the connector is on or not, car running or not).

Can't test the G31 connector right now as I have to tear the other parts out to get to it.

I'm sorry you feel I'm not doing the things you are advising me to do... I do feel that I am though, so I'm unsure of your exasperation here .

Thx for the help...again..

That diagram is for the g31, not the asv.(throttle valve)

Yes.. I was tracking that. Tested the asv because it's right there and that's the part I know as good.

If Turbo isn't too irritated with me I would love to see the the ASV. Throttle actuator valve diagram from his source.

That diagram is for the g31, not the asv.(throttle valve)

is this wiring diagram available to the masses or just special access? This shows different info from the Bentley manual I have. Granted the bentley manual only shows info from the 2.0L CR TDI CBEA

I'm sharing from my private collection. Go to Erwin, pay for 24 hr access and download all the specifics you want on whatever you want .... It's low cost and excellent value.

Finally got it to download. I cant find any page that is similar to what you have provided. Specifically, yours shows the G69 TPS and the J338 Throttle valve control module as the same unit. I cant verify that in the diagrams that I downloaded. They look more similar to the Bentley manual. (Searched by vin and manually using year/model/...)

Anyways, thx for the tips and hope you all are having a good holiday. Finally snowed today here in the Pacific NW

Well I didn't make up the info that I shared so not sure what you're saying. That diagram comes from the version that I have for a CJAA engine. What did you download?

Well, just thought I'd bring this thread to complete. Car is back to working and running as normal, no fault codes.

As I thought the problem was to do with the electrical system and I didn't have the know-how (nor the desire) to start tracing and tracking electrical connections I took it to the VW dealer to diagnose.

Their original diagnosis was bad electrical connections and they ordered a replacement harness ( 1K0971349CD ) to install.

Upon installing this new harness, the problem remained. After more troubleshooting with VW they realized that the connectors for MAP sensor and the Throttle actuator ( j338 ) had somehow been swapped. There was only 4.5 volts getting to terminal 2 on the throttle body actuator valve when there should have been battery voltage. Since this meant that battery voltage was now getting to the MAP sensor, that sensor was now fried since it should only be getting 5 volts. They placed likely blame on the local shop that replaced the alternator and the battery. Which makes sense since those connections would have had to been removed to replace the Alternator. Once the MAP sensor was replaced, and with all connections going to the right place, all problems and codes were resolved.

The Dealer ended up not charging me for labor to install the harness since it was not the problem (swapped connections was) and gave me a free rental car while it was being fixed. This is one time when the local shop was wrong and the dealer was awesome.

So that wraps it up. I thank everyone for there help with this situation.
