Bad Alternator / Battery died while driving

Had a bad alternator that was intermittently charging. While driving the alt quit altogether and then the battery died while driving. Have since had the alt and battery replaced. Now the car is in a low power mode (limp mode?) throwing the following codes as scanned by my VCDS. None of these were present prior to the battery dieing... Are these issues related to the car shutting down?

All Electrical connections look fine and connected. Its just very suspicious that none of these codes showed until the batt died and the car unexpectedly shut down... thanks for reading...

Double check the plugs and wiring for the asv, that's right there by the alternator, and could have been damaged/disconnected when the alternator was replaced.

Oh, so are there other codes that didn't make it on there? Looks like it must only be a partial scan. I'd have to look at the wiring diagrams, but with that, i think there is a common fuse for each of those, which if blown would set those codes. I'm not 100% sure on that, I'd have to check the diagram for your car.

Probably boost pressure regulation codes, I've seen a couple of throttle bodies fail, they cause a host of issues.

Try do an adpation of the throttle body, if it fails replace it. Should be under channel 10 I believe
Adaptation for the throttle body gives me nothing.. no sound ...no output... probably a sign...

I get what you are saying here but they all have the fault priority is 2... so they all are causing the same " immediate service appointment " requirement.
You're not showing the full scan or all the codes...... I don't know about the rest around here, but my crystal ball is broken.

Did you reset the codes before you did the adpation? It wont work if code is active. If code comes straight back I'd start looking at a failed throttle body
Tried clearing codes .... P2101 would come straight back.. Adaptation still produces no results

I have a Bentley manual as well and have been scouring the wiring diagrams.. I can’t find a blown fuse anywhere. I really do appreciate all the tips !

You may have just changed the battery and alternator but I still see low voltage on your latest scans 12.01 and 11.48 . Low voltage can cause weird codes and may be why the adaptation won’t work. Try fully charging the battery and then clearing the codes and see what happens.

For the intermittent code, check\clean the connector and look for (and run) output tests.
You could have a dirty connector or a mechanical bind, etc.

I would actually suggest taking things apart, as at that milage, it is very feasible that your valve is gunked up and needs cleaning.

    • G31 unplugged causing 000568/P0238 - Signal too High:
      • T4eh/1 = ground
      • T4eh/3 = 5.05V (5V supply from ECU)
      • T4eh/4 = 5.73V (Signal return to ECU)
    • G31 plugged in and backprobing
      • T4eh/4 = 1.85V (Signal return to ECU)

In the direction of flow, Throttle Valve Control Module J338 is mounted before EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve N18. An electric motor in Throttle Valve Control Module J338 moves the throttle plate with a gear. Adjustment of the throttle is infinite and can be adapted to the respective load and speed of the engine. The Throttle Valve Control Module J338 has the following tasks: In certain operating situations, a difference between intake manifold pressure and exhaust gas pressure is generated through the throttle. This pressure difference facilitates exhaust gas return. In the regeneration mode of the diesel particulate filter, the intake air volume is regulated with the throttle. When the Throttle Valve Control Module J338 motor is switched off, the throttle is closed. Less air is taken in and compressed and the engine shuts down smoothly.

Effect of Failure
If Throttle Valve Control Module J338 fails, there is no regulation of the exhaust gas return rate.
Active regeneration of the diesel particulate filter does not take place.

You may have just changed the battery and alternator but I still see low voltage on your latest scans 12.01 and 11.48 . Low voltage can cause weird codes and may be why the adaptation won’t work. Try fully charging the battery and then clearing the codes and see what happens.
And that makes me ask if possibly the issue wasn't the alternator, but the alternator fuse, which is a fairly common misdiagnosis. If the fuse is blown, it won't charge. Can't tell you how many times I've seen that in my profession, and customers will insist it's that alternator you just rebuilt for them, not anything wrong with their car.

I had originally suspected this from the start. The alternator didnt work at times and other times it would work fine for an entire trip.
I believe the alternator fuse is on the “multifuse” module on the front of the fuse box in the engine bay (200 amp?). I discounted this because originally the alt was intermittent and I didn’t think a fuse could be intermittent.

Yes.. it’s the multifuse type that I don’t think you can test. Replaced as a whole unit with several other fuses. I’ll try and get one today.

Just battery tested now….Multimeter showed the batt at 12.1 after sitting overnight. 13.6 after I started and had it running.

Should be low 14s
Your voltage regulator on the alternator is probably toast.

Or you have crappy wires\connections..... test the output at the alternator instead of at the battery to see if your cables\connections are the potential issue.... start doing voltage drop tests and isolate your issue.

What brand alternator did you install? That is low, though not extremely low. It should be around 14 volts. 13.5 is the minimum.

brand new bosch alternator.

So just to switch gears a little I changed the oil and the fuel filter (were due). Took it our for a spin and now I have a new code to add. All others the same. Still low power mode. Drives "fine" just doesn't accelerate as normal.... doesn't rev past 3000

Tough time getting the connector off the MAF (broken tab) and the MAP sensor (tough location to try and remove) to inspect but i will keep trying.

Also will do the volt drop test. I did those prior to the alt change and didnt find anything abnormal.
