I have my 96 B4 and 97 B4 engine and transmissions and am considering a 1998 beetle tdi that needs one but I don't know which engine it has, more importantly will they mate up?
Thanks

New Beetle uses an 02J transmission ('98 would use transmission code DQY... engine is ALH...)

Those Passats used 02A transmissions...

I doubt you could make things work...

No TDIs Currently, I have an R36 Corrado. I've had an ALH Corrado swap, AHU Corrado swap and 2003 TDI Jetta
The b4 & mk3 Tdi transmissions are missing the bottom mount bosses for the mk4.

The 20v transmission will work but the gear ratios would be short which means more fun but less economy. You could always swap the tdi's 5th gear for slightly better economy over the stock 20v Trans.

Some old school mk2 diesel guys liked gasser transmissions in their diesels.

The old school Mk2 diesels have shorter ratios than the gassers. They put gasser transmissions in because they could go faster.

The TDI transmissions are a lot taller than the gasser transmissions. If you put a gasser trans in you will be shifting too often, not using the full powerband, reducing top speed and killing fuel economy.
