So, I just checked the build specs by VIN HERE and in says that our GSW has the 7E6 option installed. I haven't noticed any heat until the coolant temp is ~140°F so I'm wondering if it has to be activated with VCDS...

Yes, aux heat can be turned off and on with VCDS. Mine comes on automatically with the heat control on max and the outside temp is below some unknown-to-me degree. It came that way from the factory.

Personal experience. Aux heat and seat warmers in conjunction with cold temperature to put a serious strain on the alternator to charge the battery. Short trips and big electric loads equals discharged battery. The 200 rpm bump in idle speed isn't quite enough to offset demand.

Interesting. Aren't our alternators rated for 140 amps ? Seems like that would be enough.

My better half hates the cold so the heat is always blowing full blast and seat warmers on high. Doesn't matter if the engine is putting out any heat yet or even in the car long enough for the seat to heat, that's just how she is. I've learned the hard way, 140 amps has to be applied for much longer than a few minutes per restart.

Another post reported that to activate, both heat and fan speed must be at max and coolant temp below an estimated 150F.

Mine activates well below max settings on either fan speed or temp control. Last week I started the car after work, about -10C outside. Went out to brush off the snow and by the time I got back in, less than a minute, warm air was on the windshield and melting the snow.

I don't think either of my '15 Golfs have this option. Both are S models one a sportwagen.

My SEL does not have the auxiliary heater installed which could very well be due to the cooling system being "hot climate" which uses at least a slightly larger radiator for the intercooler circuit.

Pretty interesting to read everything there, especially this bit for my car: 0EN Installation differentiation for vehicle components: Installation differentiation for transmission MQ 350 vehicle components.
I wonder if this explains why I have steel shift forks inside my transmission as opposed to brass. The service manual does specify that some versions of the DQ350 6spd have "reinforcement measures" on the gears and shafts.

I know quite well what it is in Fahrenheit. I choose not to use that method. Celsius is hardly crap. If you look at how the two methods were developed to measure temperature, you'll learn that not only did Fahrenheit not meet his goal, but that he also used dubious scientific methodology.

And American is capitalized when used as a way to denote a national recognition. :D

No telling where a vehicle ends up after it leaves the factory. Winters can be frigid and summers can be blistering, either extreme is within a day's drive from me. It would have been nice if auxiliary heat AND hot climate options were standard equipment along with engine block heater.

After all, VW managed to include air conditioning with heated seats.

Agreed. Production would be so much cheaper too if every car had every option. Pick a color and tranny and the rest is included. Ready for any climate. Just cause you live in Texas now doesnt mean the car might not live in Alaska later.

I bought mine in Orlando and drove it home to Alaska. So glad it has the electric heater and not the bigger radiator. No idea why that occurred. Probably depends on where they bought the car from before the fix.

Both my Mk6 Golf TDIs and JSW TDI were hot country cars and had the electric aux heater. Currently driving a Mk6 Golf TDI again, I can hear the relay click to energize the heater, fan speed above 2, heat control set to max and there is also an outside air threshold as well. I believe once 150-160 degrees F is reached, the heater is turned off if all the other controls are still set.

My Mk7 TDI was a hot country car and did not come with the aux heater. I assumed it was because of the new cooling circuit arhecticure to speed warm up.

Mine is Hot Country without Auxillary Heating.

Originally delivered to Florida. That explains why I couldn’t ever hear that relay click when playing with the heat.

When checking for Auxiliary Heating, you are sitting in car , or have another person under hood ? Listening for relay click

Make your better half better by educating her. The AUX heater is only 1000 watts. So if you turn the fan on to high right away, you are pretty much doing nothing more than chilling the AUX heater faster than it can produces heat.

Tell her to run the fan on 2 for the first few miles and she will feel some heat within about 2 blocks. It won't be a lot of heat, but it does help the car to warm up faster. Heated seats, mirrors and defogger? Turn them on as soon as the car starts. The extra load on the alternator will help the engine heat up faster.

That would be great if there were an actual relay. The AUX heat controller is a solid state device built in to the AUX heater. The best way to tell if it is installed and working is to look for a Z-35 measuring block in VCDS.

The 2015 EA288 engines are a completely new design and may not even have an AUX heater because of the 3 loop cooling system.

Pretty hilarious, isn't it? We are Merica and we can't do no wrong certainly has served us well in regards to the world economy and political stature. Once our business leaders tank our economy by out sourcing everything overseas, we will probably become a Chinese colony.

One of the biggest hassles in VCDS is converting Metric measurements to the antiquated SAE system. The biggest disservice our government did to us was to stop converting to metric half way.

How do you know if it’s hot country or not?

Under the AC system in VCDS, it's check box and it won't be checked. once checked it actually makes the AC work the way it should, blow cold air all the time.

I think that he means the "Hot Country" (8Z6) cooling system on the VIN build spec., not the A-C setting.

If anyone wants to look into adding the auxiliary heater, the part number is 5Q0963235C.

Looks to be about $50-$100 used and $200 new. Not all that unreasonable actually. I wish I could plug in a FrostHeater where I park.

Yeah i wonder what else is required to make it function as it should....
