Automatic Shifter Issue

Hell everybody,

I have a 2005 Jetta TDI and today while I was getting ready to pull out of the parking lot I could not get my shifter into drive.

The vehicle started fine, and I was able to apply brake pressure and move it out of park (not a brake sensor issue).
As I got passed neutral, into reverse it physically prevented me from moving into drive.
Something mechanical was resisting my movement.

I turned the car on and off, and tried again but no luck..
Finally I forced it into the drive position; however, the vehicle would only go in reverse.
After that stupid attempt of using brute force, I shut off the car and it would not start again since my dash was still indicating I was in reverse?

Thankfully it's sitting on a road between two garages, and a NAPA or I'd be toast.
I'm not even sure I can get the vehicle in neutral to actually push it.

Could this be a broken linkage issue?
Any ideas?

Update:

It turns out my shifter cable end has snapped off, and the bushing is missing altogether.
The plastic loop is busted so it was not connected to anything.

I've found this video so you guys can see what I'm talking about.
I'm going to try and hack something up with a coat hanger and/or some zip ties until I can get the piece from a parts car.
