Have you guys tried passatworld? Also there was a thread on here abour converting the window motor board using parts from another.
Actually; as near as I can tell, the motors are identical & it's just the control modules that need to be switched over and those are just held in place by four clips.

Yes you are correct the motors are the same.
Problem is the control units don't have a separate part number in ETKA and cannot be purchased individually, therefore making you spend $250 per side on new window motors. Argh!

Always look at the pics on ebay as power folding is not always listed. But if its memory it will have power folding. Look for the plug connector to be full not just the four wires.
Nice find. You're quite right, there will be a much larger bundle of wires in the harness if it's folding/memory.

Woot! My local breaker just took delivery of the perfect doner car. My new motors await. Just need to run two wires, swap out the modules & run through the window programming again & I'm dialed. Can't wait to be done with theis conversion. Then I can look towards the FIS cluster I've been working on installing.

I now have sitting in front of me, two window motors from the afore-mentioned Passat. All that's left is swapping the modules over & jumpering the wires on the mirror harness. I just want to clarify one thing. In the original post, Kennedy states;
Kennedy said:
Take the scotchlocks and on the mirror harness scotchlock pin 2 and 8 together. Wiring done.
Does this mean that two wires should be jumpered, but continue to their original destinations on either end? The only Scotchlocks I'm firmiliar with have a spot to insert a single wire for connection to an existing lead. Can someone fill me in on this as I really want to put this mod to bed once & for all. Thanks in advance.

Ok, so I went back & revisited previous posts. I actually found one of my own that states the wires in question are only grounds. Guess I answered my own question a while ago. Anyone interested in winning lotto numbers? I get 30% of the winnings

And..... Success. Worthless (?) goofy-mod #27 is now put to bed. I just ended up cutting the wires on the mirror itself & soldering them together. Other than one heat-shrink I forgot to shrink, everything seems to be perfect. On an aside; The mirrors on my '03 seem to fold at any speed. Any guesses?

I have a 1999 Beetle with the picture of a folding mirror on my mirror control. Does that mean I have folding mirrors? I have turned the knob to that position and nothing happens, and I can't find any instructions in manual that say what I need to do. Maybe both mirror motors are dead? I don't know. How can I determine if my mirror motor switch is hooked up? Thanks.

Nope. VW has superseeded the OE p/n into the same switch as the one for folding mirror applications. Most likely; at some point in your car's lifetime someone probably broke the knob (semi-brittle part) off & it got the new-style replacement. Makes sense, but it can also make quite confusing when you're in search of the correct power window modules.

Has anybody done this mod recently? Kennedy lists the parts needed for a 2002+ MK4, what about for a 2001? My car was manufactured 03/21/01 according to ETKA, so I guess I would need the early solution. What does that involve, and where can I get the parts? I've been searching my usual sources without luck...

Window Motors L & R?
Mirror Housings L & R?

If I understand things right, the mirror housings don't matter what year they come from, it's the window motors, is that correct? I contacted TMTuning and they have the stubby mirrors available with the folding option. If my assumptions are correct, I would just need to find the correct window motors.

First, a parts list. The parts listed are for late 2001 models and beyond (vehicles with dynamic Can-Bus). The parts list is the same for 2000 and before vehicles, but the parts are different.
Okay, dumb question. What is considered late 2001? I bought my Jetta in June 01, and the car was manufactured on 03/21/2001. Initially I was thinking this would be an early 2001 model, but then I remembered that the 2001 models started selling probably mid 2000, so is mine actually a late model 2001 with the dynamic Can-Bus? Is there a way to tell?

The easiest way is to check what part number you have for your current CCM.

You can check it with VAGCOM or just unscrew it and read the number on the outer casing.

1J0 xxx xxx = early; 1C0 xxx xxx = late

Then go from there.

Does anybody have the part number for the 2002+ Passat window motors for the folding mirrors? All I've seen are the window motors for the Jettas. I'm interested in doing the Frankenmotor.

Left front one should be a 1C0-959-801-009 & the right side should be a 1C0-959-802-A-009. The part number should be on the unit, but the important part (009) probably won't be visible. Don't take the folding-mirror switch being in the car as gospel either. It took me 8 months of waiting for a car to come available with the correct motors in it.

Okay, thanks Mike. That's pretty much what I had come up with on my own, minus the -009. Where did you end up finding them?

Also, another question for you. You have a post over on VWnavi where you were installing a TMC box with your Navi. Does the TMC now work in the US? Years ago when I installed my MFD, I was told that TMC didn't work here. Does it work now?

Actually, the part numbers came from ETKA (I work at a dealer). As far as my TMC box, the only place it's currently installed is in the box it was shipped to me in. :( I haven't had a chance to set some time aside to actually install it. I have that, plus a full DSP upgrade that needs to go in at some point. That part is going to be a bit of work, since I plan on eliminating the need for the plug-n-play part of the harness. I guess I plan on keeping this thing, so keeping it 100% stock (or reversable) is not such a big deal any more.

I have the DSP in mine, and it works great, but I'm not happy with the wiring. I had converted the wiring from my Monsoon, but the scotch locks and butt connectors look so ghetto. I purchased a new harness from Kufatec, and just have to retrofit it. It will take some time, but it should be worth it.

Instead of cutting & pasting, I think I'm going to move the pertinant terminals from the quad-lock connector into the correct style plugs. Looks like that should work at the deck end, and at the amp end as well. As for the speaker connections; I yanked a set of wires out of a non-Monsoon car & will add them to my current woofer plugs. Might do a photo how-to, if I feel brave.

The folding and the memory are 2 separate functions. 1 has nothing to do with the other. You can install a folding memory mirror with the correct switch and it will fold even if you don't have any of the memory wiring installed.

Finally installed mine today!

New electric folding mirrors without memory function.

I bought new mirror bases and new electric window motors.

Very rare on RHD Golfs and definitely none ever sold in Australia with them, so no wreckers yard option.:(

Also added the Skoda Superb puddle lights while I was doing it.

well done, now you need to get them to fold when you lock your Golf

Just trying to work out how to do that wiring wise.

I wanted to be able to fold them "on the fly" if required when driving, which seems to preclude them folding automatically when you lock car.

Hmmm...interesting...if you stop the car and switch off the ignition....you can still fold the mirrors as long as you haven't opened the door.
(Like the convenience setup being able to wind up the electric windows if you foget before you switch off).

This might suggest that there might be a Comfort Module EEPROM byte that might be able to be tweaked so they might fold when you lock car as well...like closing windows with remote, independent of the mechanical controlling switch.

For any Euro members - Don't some SEAT's mirrors fold when you lock car???

Yes. This is because it is reading the SAFE signal from the door switch and "see's" that it is closed, (and hasn't been opened yet), so it allows you to rollup the windows or fold the mirrors.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I've got a couple questions about this mod...

1) Has anyone who had done this mod with the "proper" EURO motors lost auto-up on their front windows? I've got auto down still, but not up.

2) Could someone please describe exactly the "status" of the folding? I have an '04, so the can-bus version. Sometimes when I fold the mirrors, I cannot "unfold" them for maybe 20 seconds after. Other times, I can fold/unfold immediately. Then one time, I had my mirror folded, go into the car, unfolded them (moved switch to the "R" position) and drove away. When I got to my destination I pulled the key out of the ignition and the mirrors folded spontaneously! The switch wasn't even in the "folded" position?! Is this normal, or is there an electric glitch with my motors or something?

Thanks guys,
-Chris
