Just saw this on Greencar Congress:

http://www.greencarcongress.com/2007/07/audi-to-begin-p.html

Summary:

Audi announced that it will begin production of a new generation of TDI diesel engines in mid-2008. The new diesels will use an optimized combustion process and an ultra-low emission system to comply with US EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 requirements as well as future European standards.
In making the announcement about its new diesels, Audi also touched on its other efforts to improve vehicle efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, including the development of a power management system with regenerative braking; a new start-stop system; selective hybridization for certain markets; and its backing for alternative fuels such as Biomass-to-Liquids (BTL) diesel and compressed natural gas.
The first of the new 2008 diesel engines will be three-liter V-6 units for the Audi A4 and Audi Q7. These engines will develop 176 kW (240 hp) and deliver peak torque of 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) in the Audi A4 and 550 Nm (406 Nm) in the Audi Q7.

For me, the really interesting thing is the BMW like hybridization. Using some capture of energy during coasting and braking for electrical loads - every little bit helps.

Good Read.

upcoming audi diesel

I just happened to be talking with an Audi saleswoman today about the A3. Half jokingly I commented I'd have to wait for the diesel model. To my surprise she said they are coming late next year. Since it's basically a Jetta hatch I should have guessed.

Anyone have any info on this? I know they have an AWD TDI in Europe, but haven't heard anything along those lines coming to the US. A VW or Audi AWD hatch would be the best. I can't wait!

The Audi A4 better come in AWD for the TDI. I'm getting sick of daily driving FWD.
Get the V6 = Yes All wheel drive will be an option if not a standard option.
Get the 4 cylinder = No AWD due to available power (hp).

I'd have alot of fun with an AWD V6 tdi in the canyons! I can't wait for it to get released if it's true! That baby could easily get 600 FT LBS of torque with some modding. :)

Last year I was on the UK Audi site eying the Saloon.

http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/new_cars/a6/saloon/specifications.html

A6 Saloon SE 3.0 TDI quattro 233 PS 6 speed
Top speed = 153
Acc. = 6.9
CO2 emiss. = 211
ROTR * Price = £32,050

A6 Saloon SE 3.0 TDI quattro 233 PS tiptronic
Top speed = 153
Acc. = 7.1
CO2 emiss. = 223
ROTR * Price = £33,450

:)

They need to get that V6 TDI in a Passat. The current Audi A4 quattro with the V6 gasser starts at $37K base, so with the TDI you know it'll be $40K and up, which is out of my budget.

but the 1.8t gets AWD, and a chipped 4cylTDI produces more power than a stock 1.8t, no?

btw - how come the Q7 gets the same engine as the A4? What the hell kinda bs is that?

I saw a report on a Euroblog that achieved the Audi A4 with the 3.0 tdi of 30 mpg. It also ran 0-62 km in 6.5 seconds. I would rather get the 2.0 tdi going into the A3 and end up with a slower car that gets around 50 mpg.

The center torque splitting differential may not be up to it. That would be an expensive oops not covered under warranty. I'd be a bit more conservative if you feel you must tweak the engine.

Note that it is tuned differently (a LOT less torque for the A4.) Also, a V6 is an upper engine for the A4, whereas a V6 is a lower engine for the Q7. It actually does make some sense, although I'm surprised they did deviate from the original plans of the A6 and Q7 getting the TDI. I'm even more surprised by this about a 4-cylinder A4 TDI in the US.

You mean the TDI ****? LOL I'm all about tweaking engines for power, but 600 torque could do a lot of damage if the weakest link in the drivetrain isn't up to the task. I'd definitely do nozzles & ECU chip though :D

Europe gets 4 cylinder TDI Quattros in the outgoing A4 - why should that change in the new A4?

Currently the TDI Quattro lineup is like this:
(There is more choice if you go front wheel drive, you can get a 2.7 in a A4 then, or a 2.0 in a A6, or a DSG in the A3)

A3
2.0 I4 140hp 6-speed manual
2.0 I4 170hp 6-speed manual
A4
2.0 I4 140hp 6-speed manual
2.0 I4 170hp 6-speed manual
3.0 V6 233hp 6-speed manual
3.0 V6 233hp tiptronic
A5
3.0 V6 240hp 6-speed manual
A6
2.7 V6 180hp tiptronic
3.0 V6 233hp 6-speed manual
3.0 V6 233hp tiptronic
Q7
3.0 V6 233hp tiptronic
4.2 V8 326hp tiptronic
A8
3.0 V6 233hp tiptronic
4.2 V8 326hp tiptronic

The US-spec A4, because the all wheel drive will cause the 4-banger to have "unacceptable" acceleration.

At least in the 170hp A3, the quattro accelerates better ;)

0-100 kph times, acc. to the Audi website:

FWD: 8.3 s
Quattro: 7.9 s

For the A4 with the same engine it's:
FWD: 8.6 s
Quattro: 8.5 s

I didn't say AoA's decisions made any sense. ;)

Also, I'm sure there's a bit of a "if you can afford AWD, you can afford a V6" thing going on here, too.

Oh, sure. And a larger car.
A lot of the car business is not about making sense - but I guess, lots of people on this forum would be most excited if they brought the TDI-e over.

Bah! Pure marketing... more than enough power for the AWD system with the TDI. My wife loves here Golf Country (Syncro) TDI!

I picked up a car magazine in London a couple of months ago and it said the A4 3.0 TDI got 37mpg highway, but the Audi UK website says 44.8 highway. I'm wondering if that is some imperial gallon variance or Audi inflating their numbers or something else. 0-60 times were the same.

'mericans got cheap with their gallon... why why why doesn't everyone use L/100km - it makes so much more sence!

Almost all europe (except great britain) uses L / 100 km as a consumption unit of measure. canada too. Practically only america and great britain use these...

What about the Audi A8 4.2 V8? Stock, it produces 323bhp and 650Nm torque and does the 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. Have a Spider chip tune installed by: Diesel Tuner Systems UK and you're looking at a fricken neck snapping 402bhp w/851Nm along with a 0-60 at an incredible 4.9 sec. Now, bring on that 335d Beemer because this one will devour it for supper, too. ;) Later!
