Audi A6 TDI ultra Goes the Distance and Sets New World Record

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS confirms title after A6 TDI ultra is driven to 14 countries on a single tank of fuel

  • 14 countries and 1158.9 miles covered on one tank of diesel
  • Audi A6 TDI ultra averaged 75.9mpg overall
  • The #RecordRoadTrip began in Maastricht at 9.48am (GMT) on Tuesday 9 June and ended in Hungary at 12.44pm (GMT) on Wednesday 10 June
  • 28 hours of driving completed almost non-stop by Andrew Frankel and Rebecca Jackson
  • World record galvanises the Audi ultra philosophy of pioneering efficiency
Edit: Note - Mileage and fuel volume figures likely in UK gallons. 75.9 MPG (imp) = 63.2 MPG (US) = 3.7 L /100 km

Even 63 MPG US is great for this size car. Outstanding!

Well, my "average" on my 18 mile commute is under 45 MPH going and under 40 coming home. But I'm still 60+ on the freeway portion (about 2/3 the trip). It doesn't take much slow driving to drop the average.

Very impressive! This isn't how an A6 would even be available in the US but very impressive nonetheless. It's not a quattro and is running a 2-liter diesel possibly EA288. Drivetrain-wise it's a Mk7 Golf/Jetta clone. I read the 50 MPH average as meaning they didn't exceed 50 MPH (much) and maintained a very steady pace.

I'd like to see local TDI clubs have a MPG challenge to see if such figures can be matched. With 50 vs 73 liters to play with distance isn't contestable but MPG should be doable. Over-inflate your eco-plus tires and lets go...

Lots of miles on a tank! I like the range on my JSW (Chat Passat range is much better, close to the A6 in the article in fact!). Choosing when to stop for fuel is an excellent benefit of a high mpg vehicle.

And the ultra badge is available in the A3 and other models that might be less costly than the A6. Nice!

Of course, this statement from the article just plain hurts:
"The ‘ultra’ badge is also reserved for the most frugal A3, A4, A5, A7 Sportback and TT models, all of which are available to order now."

Actually, not in NA. Not yet, anyway.

In an old episode of Top Gear, didn't Clarkson drive a Jaguar diesel from Basile to Blackpool on a single tank of fuel ... getting roughly the same fuel economy?

Been a while since I've seen that one, am remembering 900-950mi? Forget the tank size as well...

Ya and he was trying to lose too. He had the AC going and anything else so he would burn fuel faster. I think it backfired and he ended up there first didn't he?

I have a 2014. Haven't taken a trip in it, but between Pittsburgh & Morgantown, WV, I have done as well as 45 MPG @ 70 MPH. There are hills & curves. Would like to see what I could do between Columbus & Cincinnati. That aside...very powerful; handles beautifully.

Although this is completely off topic:

I was sent to Germany for work in May, I rented an A6 TDI V6 for a drive between Hamburg and Frankfurt. I stomped on it like a rental car, which is to say STOMPED on it. I managed to get 28 mpg while going as fast as I possibly could, while still being safe, for the entire trip (tapped 157 mph and drove 100-120 mph consistently).

Beautiful car, a little big for my preference, but would love to have one if I could afford it. Would be really interested what kind of mileage these return when not being beaten on so hard.
