Audi A3 engine heater question

From what I've read on various forums, Audi A3's from 2012 and up were not equipped with engine block heaters from the factory. While changing oil on my 2012 A3, I noticed something resembling an inline heater in the lower radiator hose. It was not something that someone added. It was definitely something factory installed. Does anyone here have any idea what it is ?

i have a 2015 A3 with a block heater which I am using a lot these days, it is factory issue. Without a picture hard to confirm but it sounds right what you are saying.

Look for an outlet on your driver side front lower grill, near the foglight. If you don't have the cord, I have one that I am looking to sell.
