I've seen a Dodge Sprinter with the Mercedes emblems on the front and rear. So, if you put Audi insignia on a Golf, you might fool at least a few people.

Bad example - the Sprinter has been made by Mercedes in Germany since 1995, and was imported to the US and Canada after 2001, and badged as Dodge or Freightliner.

You're right of course, and I'm not suggesting that an Audi A3 is just a rebadged Golf. But it is not a gross exaggeration to say that, if you take an $18k Golf and add about $6k in options or GTI parts, you can get pretty close to a stripped-down $32k Audi A3.

Thanks ANDYLYCO, Now I have to decide do I get an A3 TDI or a MK6 Golf TDI. Decisions decisions!!!
The only thing that would sway me to choosing an Audi A3 TDI over a MK6 Gold TDI, and even a Jetta Sport Wagon for that matter, would be if they offered it in Quattro and stick, and NOT front wheel drive only! The name Audi to me is synonymous with 4WD. I just wouldn't understand one with front wheel drive given the extra cash for what? The badge?

I wish they would have offered it with Quattro as well maybe even with a slightly higher tuned engine with 150hp assuming an extra 10hp wouldn't push it into UREA territory. Does anyone know if the A3 TDI (sportback) will have more cargo space than the Mk VI Rabbit TDI?

Is the quattro on the A3 Torsen? 'cos if it's Haldex, than no advantage over the Golf with 4WD.
Those of us in the USA cannot get the Golf/Rabbit with 4WD (unless you buy the R32) so it would still be a big difference.

Im gonna hold off on buying anything new until I can get an MKVII 170hp TDI. But the A3 TDI does look very tempting.

Oh, I see. Didn't know that.
Yes, the selection is quite limited in the USA. That goes for engine choice too. For the Golf (Rabbit) it is the 170hp 2.5L engine. That's the only one until the 140hp 2.0 TDI is sold here.

Yeah but you get the Scirocco and look at all the engine options you have for the Golf! ;)

GOLF

Gas

1.4 TSI 90 kW 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG

1.4 TSI 118 kW 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG

Diesel

2.0 TDI 81 kW 5-speed manual or 6-speed DSG

2.0 TDI 103 kW 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG

2.0 TDI 103 kW 6-speed manual and 4MOTION

SCIROCCO

Gas

1.4 TSI 90 kW 6-Speed

1.4 TSI 118 kW 6-Speed manual or 7-speed DSG

2.0 TSI 147 kW 6-Speed manual or 7-speed DSG

Diesel

2.0 TDI DPF 103 kW 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG

We don't have the TSI engine in ANY configuration on ANY model! :(

Of course you pay more but it would be nice to have one or two of these options here in the USA...

I totally agree.. The price difference is just too much to overcome. I think Audi will find it to be a severe step for people to get their head around..
I too would want it in awd and stick only!
I think in all of thier "OOOO" wisdom they will offer neither.. Danm Austrians..
The cool Audi TDI will be both the A4 and Q5 3.0L bi-turbo(hopefully in stick as well). The 3.0L will have monstrous torque.. Count me in..
A4 Avant TDI 3.0L bi-turbo stick
Black on Black, Prestige, S-Line Package and Navi.
I'm ready to order now Audi..

I'll take the matching sedan!

I didn't know you picked up an '09 TDI. Are you still going to sell "EXPRMTL"?

Missing my Audi Q7 3.0 TDI
If I could have ordered the A3 in Quattro in '07, I would have. I am not a fan of the JSW as far as looks and the GTI was just too much kid-rocket for my tastes. The Bluetooth, adaptive xenon's, glass roof and other bits VW didn't offer in Golf's or Jetta's were also a factor. If my choices where, JSW tdi front drive stick, A3 front drive auto, or A4 Avant Quattro auto/stick, I would definitely pick the 3.0l A4 over the JSW or the A3 but I still like the A3 more than a JSW. I think the comments regarding the hard sell for an A3 front drive tdi are spot on. If I had it to do over again, I would be driving an A4 Avant right now rather than the A3.

Gone...
I'm really rather wishing VAG will bring over the new Polo. Both the 1.2 TSI (105 hp, 5.5 L/100 km average = 43 mpg) and 1.6 Blue Motion TDI (90 hp, 3.8 L/100 km = 62 mpg average) in a very attractive subcompact package would do it for me.

New Polo

The best way to get N. Americans out of their (comparatively speaking) Land Yachts, is to make small cars as attractive as they are frugal. I think this new Polo does just that. I'd line up for one tomorrow to replace my Passat wagon at lease end if it was coming here.

i'm really getting pumped about audi bringing a diesel over, but for a reason that might not be so obvious.

the A3 tdi would be a direct competitor to a smaller bmw diesel. from the numbers i'm seeing, the 118d would be every bit of a match for the a3, with better fuel economy.

of course bmw probably would not go that far down in their lineup. maybe a 120d or 123d :) any of these would be a natural competitor for the A3. pricing is not that different either.

i could end up very happy that I can't afford the 335d right now.

Audi A3 TDI by year's end?

I got a letter last week from my Audi/VW dealer here in Richmond, VA and it was telling about some current AOA specials. In the middle of it it said something along the lines of 'Psst, the A3 will be available as a TDI near the end of the year'. Not what I ultimately want, but I believe it's a good start. Now we have a delayed Q7 TDI and a probable A3 TDI. Did anyone else get a letter like this?

Very short notice, but Motorweek on Speed is featuring the A3 TDI at 10:30am EST today.

It was hardly worth waiting through all the commercials for the 4 or 5 minute segment on the A3 TDI -- nothing new was reported, except maybe the $28k base price estimate. They got 42+ mpg on their test drive with the DSG tranny (front-wheel drive only).

OK, numbers from Motorweek's test of the A3 2.0 TDI:

42.7 mpg combined w/ S-tronic dual-clutch tranny
8.7 sec 0-60
16.9 sec / 83 mph 1/4 mile
120 ft avg 60-0 stopping distance

Estimated $28,000 base
8 airbags standard
Open sky 2-piece glass roof option
Bose audio option

They really liked it

Autobloggreen has a lengthy write up and a bunch of photos.

If it had 170hp I might consider it. as it is styled very similiar to JSW.

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/05/21/review-2010-audi-a3-tdi-diesel-with-a-healthy-dash-of-sport/
From what I've read somewhere, going to the 170hp engine would require urea treatment to reduce NOx, which would add more expense and complexity.

IMO they should just put the 140hp engine in every car they build for North America, then offer a smaller TDI engine for the Polo and any other small car or light truck that might be offered.

In 1984-85 the Audi 5000 with the turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine (predecessor to the A6) had 140 hp. This model topped the Car & Driver Top Ten List in both 1984 and 1985.

If 140 hp is not enough for you, then TDIs are easy to chip. You can have 170 hp if you want it, you just probably won't be able to get it directly from the factory.

Sure? That would be $1000 more than the 2.0 gasser. In Europe, the 2.0 gasser is 2,200€ more expensive than the 140P diesel.
Just passing along info. You'd have to contact MotorWeek if you want to know where they got the number from. They did say it was estimated.

My wife and I have looked at BMW many times when looking for a new car and have always ended up walking away. The prices are just to steep for me unless you purchase stripped down model. The dealer network plays hardball, Last time I looked at a 3 series, the dealer showed me a "new" car "demo" with 11000 miles on the odo and wanted two grand under msrp. As far as I am concerned, 11000 miles is a used car. Then BMW came out with the 1 series, bumped the prices on the 3 series and made the 1 series as expensive as the previous 3 series. No bmw's in my future no matter how good they are. I don't need super power HP, just gove me a nice handling enjoyable car with enough power to get the job done and good fuel economy. Of course, affordable pricing is needed also.

As a teenager and youg adult, I remeber BMW being a more exclusive vehicle. Now, they are everywhere. I think the slowing economy will bring BMW back to earth, eventually.
