Hello All,

I finally decided to pull the trigger on purchasing a new Passat TDI SEL Premium...so I've been scouring all of Texas trying to find one that is close to my preferred configuration. A dealership in Lewisville has a white one, with titan black interior, that is "will be here in the next couple days or so".

He then went on to tell me that there would be a "market adjustment" of roughly $2,500. I thanked him and hung up. I can't believe this...

I am being told at other dealerships that they will order one for me and charge invoice. This is sounding like the route I'll be choosing, but I hate to wait 3 months for my new car. Any updates on rough lead times from ordering to delivery???

I don't know which dealer you were calling, I'm guessing the one in Katy, it was the only one we didn't check out, but I'd call one of the other dealers in the area. I just bought the same car you are looking for in SE though, without that markup at another dealer in the area.

I had a dealer that tried to do that to me too. I bought my car elsewhere. Tell them that if that is the way they treat their customers, you can probably get a much better deal in six months - at their going-out-of-business sale. Find a dealer that treats you right, even if you have to travel or get your car shipped in. You could get the car shipped across the country to you for far less than $2500.

I waited 4 months for the one I ordered, then when they said it would be another three, I looked elsewhere and found one out of state. I paid sticker and it was a hassle to insure, but worth it.

kydsid...It is the VW dealership in Lewisville, TX. The dealership in Katy (West Houston VW) is the one that seems to be the most helpful and eager to accomodate that I've found. If I pull the trigger to order, he is the one I'll be calling.

Krfar...who at Boardwalk do you deal with?? I spoke with somebody at Boardwalk last week and they had a black on black that just arrived. He told me that there were 2 different people "racing" to the dealership to see it, but he would consider it sold if I gave him a $500 deposit.

All...I appreciate the input and responses. I'm hoping that 7 months is not the norm for ordered cars with the current increased production that is going on at the plant. I have the luxury of a running truck that I'm currently driving (burning through fuel at a rate of 13.1 miles per gallon), so I can wait on mine to come in and/or be found.

They apparently had April 23 (?) as cutoff order date for '12 model year . Either way, there is simply 0 practical difference between the 12 and 13 models... although the rear vents that were added in '13 might matter in TX

I'm hoping that a quality tint job will help offset the crazy heat that we have down here. I'll be the only passenger 90% of the time...so as bad as it sounds, the kids will just have to deal with the slow cool down of the rear passenger area.

I read all the posts about the 2012 order cut-off, but have had multiple dealerships tell me that a new order can be placed without any issue.

I keep waiting for somebody to come out of the shadows swearing that the fuel efficiency numbers touted here are all bull$heet. It just hasn't happened. I drive 25,000 - 27,000 miles per year and can't seem to make the numbers add up with any gasser that is equal to the size of the Passat. If I can average 38 - 40 mpg's of mixed driving I will be extremely happy.

Not to mention...the savings in fuel costs will cover the cost of the new car and allow me to save my truck for when it is needed and ultimately for my 10 yo to drive.

I can personally guarantee the mileage is not BS, even with Houston traffic. Worst combined MPG with a 80 mile commute is 37, and that was with me lead footing it driving her to work for a bit. Its my wifes car and she is always topping that.

If you are coming from a truck to this car the AC won't be a problem. I honestly think this cars AC is bigger than the unit in my F150. On max it blows like a tornado and cools much faster than the truck and it has rear A/C vents. It also cools faster than the Pathfinder we traded and it had a seperate AC in the rear.

In any case you are in the same thought process as for costs and mileage as we were prior to buying. I think you will be happy.

P.S. Give Momentum a call. They just emailed me that there are two TDI's matching my inquiry from a month ago. White exterior, SEL, but they didn't mention interior color as I didn't have a preference.

People already know the difference between 12 and 13.

In 13, rear vent is going to be re-introduced. SEL Premium will add Rear View camera. My sales guy told me that there might be 1000 dollars difference. But if I were you, I would wait.

Or if you really need a 12 model, I can refer you to my sells guy.

The factory supposidly stopped taking new orders for 2012's on April 20th. But, if I dealer had an order in for a car and the factory had not started building it yet, then that order could be changed, this is what I did. My dealer had a Black on Black TDI SE Nav & Sunroof DSG on order. Yesterday he switched it to a Platnium Gray w/Moonrock TDI SE 6M for me, today factory confirmed change in order. . It should be put on the production schedule within two weeks. So it is still possible to order the car you want, as long as your dealer has something on the order books that the factory has not actually started to build. According to my dealer, as of Monday, he didn't have the ability to order a 2013 and didn't know when he would.

Order now means 2013 model and likely early Sept delivery. 2013 SEL adds rear backup camera and rear of center console vent (2012 just has under front seat vents). Price rumor is $1000 extra for 2013 SEL over 2012, but unconfirmed.

If you want something quickly, you can find a better dealer/salesman to get you a 2012 within a week and sell within $300 of invoice.

I had never paid anything at all near full sticker for any vehicle either until this one. I know full well though what the inventory and holdbacks are for VW and it isn't a huge spread like other manufacturers (ie no 38k stickers leaving for 30 like at Ford ). Believe me I went to everyone thinking at least one dealer in the area would go a lot less than sticker and got no where. I'm still happy with the price I paid. Below sticker pricing is few and far between from what I have seen.

If you were wondering I paid full sticker, but that included window tint, all weather floor mats and cargo trunk system for free.

TDI SE Manual here.... sticker $26,765, paid $24,898, and they added in floor mats to the price ($135?) Middle of February. Shop the internet, and print it out, ask them to match prices if you fine a good deal on Cars.com Have them email you an offer and print it out before you go down there, and hold them to the price, no monkey business.

I went to several dealers in MA, NH and ME, none of them were asking MSRP, most were $500 over invoice, two were $300 over invoice. Chris F. @ VW of Langhorne was a little less, but we just couldn't get the deal together, for a number of reasons. He is a sponsor here and gets rave reviews from people who have completed deals with him.

Don't fret. I shopped around and finally found the car I was looking for at a "reputable" dealership. I paid $200 under invoice and this was 3 weeks ago. Tell all the dealerships that charge anywhere near MSRP to shove it! I'd tell the ones that are over MSRP to do something else.

Op, i ordered a '13 tdi sel last sat from a dealer in sw houston.
What it amounts up to is when an allocation becomes available,the factory will build what is spec'ed out.
But with the recent mess with vw running out of nav units...yes both models, the nav cars gets pushed back over again.

The next time a dealer tells you or shows you a "market adjustment", look at them with a grin and "Wow, what an unbelievable coincidence. I have a corresponding market adjustment myself to make right now" and get up and walk out. Suntrup here in St. Louis pulls that crap. Scum of the earth dealership chain with an "F" BBB rating, yet they sell a lot of cars. Shows how dumb and uninformed the average car buyer is.

Try over at Boardwalk in McKinney as well. I got mine there fresh off the truck and they gave me a good deal (for Dallas), plus a great trade on my CC.

Funny enough, they had one of those markup stickers from a car they traded for on display. I was shocked.

I like to pull a number about $2000 off of msrp shipped and then ask them, if you do the deal today, how close can you get to that number. Show up at 8 pm at night before closing on a weeknight near the end of the month to do this. YMMV. You have to not be greedy, be willing to settle for another color, admit it's not your first choice, etc. all part of negotiating... never, ever let them know what you really want.... color wise, interior wise, etc. Don't bring the wife along if she blows your negotiating position. Always be willing to walk, but leave an email address that they can reach you at on a smart phone, when they realize they lost a live one, so that they can at least come back with an offer.

Spring time is only good for negotiating on 2011 models right now, late fall and winter are easier to get a great value.
