I'm certain that this is pretty basic stuff for many Members, but I thought it might be useful point of reference for some. The following link: http://www.api.org/programs_services/quality/oilguide.pdf takes you to a .pdf version of API's Motor Oil Guide brocure.
One of the things I found interesting is the API's definition of what the "S" and "C" designations refer to in their performance level categories. I've seen people state that their meanings refer to (Spark) ignition and (Compression) ignition. Whereas API says they refer to (Service) and (Commercial). I'm not suggesting that "S" and "C" shouldn't refer to Spark ignition and Compression ignition in some discussions, but apparently not when discussing lube oil.
