I'm going on 8 months or so of looking for a bolt on turbo for my BRM motor and I believe that Garrett makes great stuff and the Ball Bearing cartridge is a huge bonus as well.

Although this turbo would not work when they design their turbo for the Jettas it will be the same centersection/ specs/ etc...

So has anyone tried this unit yet?

I understand that Jeff did some custome programming for this unit at the Garrett factory almost 1 year ago.

Anyone?

This is discussed about every 3 days.....KermaTDI and TDIParts both sell this turbo, and I believe BlueCTTDI had one installed for a period of time.

hmm.. ball bearing is news to me as well. It's a standard VNT-17 with their version of the BEW actuator, in a nutshell. I ran one for about 8 months and quite liked it - matter of fact, the only reason I don't have it now is that I upgraded to a 1752 (17/22) hybrid last month..

That turbo is great for a mid-range upgrade.. nice to be able to run 23-24psi on the BEW.. :)

Thanks for posting this, I'll let the Garrett rep know about this, it is definitely a mis-print as these are not BB units.

As far as I know the only tuning Jeff did was on Harvieux's car at Wild Rose on the 1st prototype unit Garrett installed for R&D:confused:

Thanks for that info. That's a pretty bad mistake on their part.

By he way, I run a GT42r on my Powerstroke and I consistently was getting (w/ my other injectors) about 57# of boost, post intercooler and I never hooked up the water lines. It's just not needed in this application because I can't maintain really high boost for minutes like an 18 wheeler can. Also the GT38Rs (ball bearing cartridge) don't even have water line hook ups.

Just FYI.

So BlueCTTDi, is the 1752 an upgrade over the VNT 17? Why, how does the 1752 perform differently?

Thanks.

I've driven that car......its a blast. The difference is noticeable. From tip in to full throttle. And of course....no smoke. I think that one of the main caveats is....the ability to run so much more fuel due to the increased air mass. But....even without a new tune, you can feel the difference......

right on point, that pretty much sums it up.

the -17 is a good mid-range upgrade, but the hybrid is even better (albeit a bit more pricey).

guess you guys know the Vnt 17 garrett is selling here in the USA now is a turbo that was a stock Ibiza turbo ..OEM in europe, and has been around for quite some time...nice , easly , and durable.

It is very inexpensive and readily available from ANY garrett dealer.

So the Hybrid 1752 is the turbo I need. Who can sell me one that will bolt up to a 2005.5 Jetta?

I want one and I am ready to buy it. Charlie?

no, the vnt-17 these guys are speaking of won't work in a 2006 BRM, at least not as a drop-in replacement. But... we do have some turbos that WILL work as a direct hassle-free replacement. Give Paul a call.

VF, you'll notice a bit of difference with the turbo alone..

Jim, the 1749 is a direct replacement for the PD so long as you have one with a PD actuator.

That Garrett VNT-17 turbo won't install in a BRM motor car (Mk5 Jetta) without other significant modifications to the car and/or turbo.

It is fine for a BEW engine car (2004-2006 Golf/Beetle, 2004-2005 Jetta MK4) but still needs either a new EGR pipe custom fitted along with EGR cooler delete, and/or chip-tuning to bypass the EGR.

Hot off the press from Garrett for us to beta test on Leonard's BEW:

When Garrett is done testing it, these EGR tubes will be coming with the BEW VNT17 kits.

These would also work for someone who wants to do a Hammerhead turbo conversion and maintain all their smog crap;)

BTW Garrett wanted to thank Suns PSD the TDI club & Street Toys for pointing out the misprinted "ball bearing vnt17" article, they are going to fix it ASAP.

Yup, the beta testing of this EGR pipe will be performed on the very same 2005 Golf BEW w/5-speed Tip that Garrett installed the first documented 1749 turbo w/smart actuator in NA. I have been driving this vehicle as my daily driver nearly every day since. What a pleasure this thing is to drive. ;) If one could afford it, I would strongly suggest considering this upgrade along with an absolute killer, custom Aligator tune to match. You will not be disappointed.;) Later!
