I am looking to buy a kayak or canoe for my 2014 Jetta TDi.

1) anyone recommend a rack for them?

2) what do you think is max safe length for the canoe/kayak?

Thanks!

This is on my wagon. 17 foot.

Thule steel racks on the wagon rails. ( there was a sale at REI, I think)

I have canoe mounts for the bar, including one side that slides out of the rail and makes it easier to rest the canoe on while working it on the car.

a hitch on the back, and straps bolted under the hood to a fender mount bolt.

I picked up some black para-cord since this photo, that white rope was a little distracting.

That's a damn good idea!

My rig:

Bars are a set of Yakima Whispbars, boat is an Old Town Guide, 14.5 feet. We lost the para-cord I normally use for the bow/stern lines, but a pair of ratchet straps will do in a pinch!

As for boat length, its not that much of an issue if you're staying within the realm of sanity. Both canoes you see are longer than the cars they're mounted on. The real thing to watch out for is making sure your crossbars are far enough apart. To close and your canoe will be unstable. The farther apart the better as general rule for stuff like canoes.

Great info guys!
I was looking at a 11-13.5 foot kayak for me and a 9-9.5 kayak for my son. So based on this it looks like i will be good.

great info here!
