So I'm fairly new to the forum and new to TDIs but I am having a ton of fun learning so far and am wondering if there's anyone else in the neighborhood. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and if there are others in the West MI area I would love to set up a GTG sometime in the not too distant future. Keep in touch.

Onehotspud is from your neck of the woods too but he's been a bit absent here since he got married a couple years ago  ;) There's a few of us up here in the Traverse City area too. Just post a GTG here in the Michigan forums and prepare for TDI to be spoken in your neighborhood! :D Welcome!

Yo! Plainwell...

Dean: How's that traffic out there? 5th gear very often? Or did you Burgey your way around? Lane splitting has it's place, like at stop lights!

Traffic was nuts.....it was one of the reasons for not staying there! Took me 3 hours to go to San Diego one Saturday to visit the zoo....nothing but bumper-to-bumper on I-5 the whole way.

I was surprised that I averaged 35mpg out there. Many days on my 3-mile commute it was registering ~28mpg average on the MFD. You do get up to 5th gear in the boulevard stoplight-to-stoplight drag racing. Now with a Grand Haven-to-Holland commute I'm averaging 41mpg.

Lane splitting looked like fun. It's only legal at speeds up to 15mph, i.e. at stoplights, but you saw guys on crotch rockets doing it on the freeways at 80. There were fewer motorcycles there than I expected for the population density, but being in a cage is definitely the safer way to go out there. I'm looking forward to getting back to 2-wheel backroad rambling here in Michigan next spring.

I'm just south of Grand Rapids. There are atleast three active members in Rockford. A few in Wyoming and Grandville as well. (That I know of)

Sounds like the TDI-epicenter has moved West a bit. There seems to be a lot of you guys around G.R. now. Am I sensing a GTG?? Anyone heard from onehotspud lately? Hey Kirk, are you getting any work up this way?

Actually, I was referring to his "normal" job as he gets up here to Kalkakistan from time to time in that line of duty. I suppose it is possible he's doing so well he's given up on the 9-5 job for the thrilling 18 hour days involved with wrenching on TDIs  right Marty?

Mark,

No work up there in awhile. Last month I did get up to Marion, MI, though.
Been traveling more south this summer and fall, worked on a project in Benton Harbor for quite a bit.

Yes,.... busy, very busy w/ TDI's too.

Going to try and grab a few days around the holidays to get a furnace up and running in my garage - tired of the propane heater costs and inconveniences.

If I had a bigger facility, I'd host a GTG, I just don't have room for a crowd here, but maybe in the future......;)

Good to hear from you MOD - keep on plowing - thanks for you efforts in Northern MI!

I spend about half the year in Ludington which is about as far west as you can go in Michigan without getting wet! :p

Spoken like a true Troll. I don't mean internet troll, I mean a below-the-bridge troll. :p

If we include the Green-Bay-Packer-country part of Michigan...I think Ironwood gets the nod on being the westmost. :)

Ahhh......Mister Deano (Frug), technically you are incorrect.

The key words here are:

which is about as far west as you can go in Michigan without getting wet!

You wouldn't get "wet" going west of Ironwood, now would you?

However, even Ludington is not as far west in Michigan as you can go without getting wet...

See Fayette, MI (in the Garden Peninsula, of the U.P.)

I should have mentioned that I'm a Troll as well. :) I'm only a mile from Lake Michigan about an hour south of Ludington.

And as a born-n-raised Cheesehead, I'm fluent in Norwe-glish....ya sure, ya betcha!
