This is exactly how I feel, my car only averages 7.2L/100km as well. I also live in Brampton but I only filled up 3 times so far and every tank is getting better and better. I figure I do too much city driving, it's freezing cold and the car is too new.
7.2L/100Km is 39.2 MPG.
You are using US gallons to calculate your mileage. If you are buying fuel in Canada it's sold in Imperial gallons.
Makes a big difference when you use the proper units.

Not that hard, keep the speed under 100 and buy a manual. My drive is all rural highway with 80km speed limits and i dont ever really use my breaks, i anticipate stops all i can and down shift to maximize fuel, dont let it idle and dont race around all that much.

No that still won't work. That conversion is still in US gallons.
It's not that difficult. Just convert your kms to miles and litres to Imperial gallons, then divide.
1 Litre = 0.22 Imp. Gals
1 Km = 0.62 Miles
IMHO, whether we use Imperial or US Gallons as measurement is academic.
Now that we can only buy gas/diesel on a per Litre basis in Canada the fuel consumption should be calculated based on how much fuel is consumed (Litres) for the distance traveled (KM) and the standards of measurement adopted is Litres/100 KM.
Then one can convert that to either US MPG or Imp MPG for comparison.
Whether it's US or IMP MPG it's still the same XXLitres/100 KM isn't it?

I see a lot of car ads claiming XXLitres/100KM & XXMPG and the MPG is always based on IMP MPG since Canada is linked to UK. But realistically Canada is more closely linked to the US since we can easily drive over to the US but not to UK.
Therefor a more realistic measurement should be converted to US MPG as when we cross the border we have to buy gas/diesel based on US Gallons.
So for me I am more interested in Litres/100KM and it's equivalent in US MPG since I can only buy my fuel in Litres or US Gallons (when I am in US) and not in Imp Gallons.

Cheers.

I didn't know this type of mileage was possible with my stock fuel tank my truck would get 250 miles. I cant wait to upgrade to a tdi.

Yesterday I refuel for the second time and the odometer read 907 KM travelled since the first refuel.
I had 1/8 th tank left and the refuel took 52 L which means I had 3 L left.
My FE calculated to be 5.8 L/100 KM or 40 MPG (US).
This is an improvement on my first tank which was 6.2 L/100 KM.

I'm very impressed with the FE of the TDI and it should only get better when the ewather warms up and the TDI accumulates more mileage.:D

What about Break-In?

Aren't you supposed to drive them fairly aggressively for the first 16,000Kms? Not sure how you can get 1000 Kms per tank and still break it in properly?

All hwy? I'm in Toronto too, and I can't break 800km a tank with our traffic and cold weather. But, I know if I stayed on the hwy I would do that easily.

I do a lot of Hwy driving from Durham to Oakville/Newmarket & Downtown Toronto. But Hwy 401 quite often has major traffic congestion especially during peak hours and I do a lot of that too.

I do not travel on Hwy 407 'cos of the toll (I'm too cheap to pay for toll).:D

On most stretches of the 400 series Hwy I kept my speed to 100~120 KM/Hr (with occasional bursts to 130~140 KM/Hr) to keep pace with the traffic flow and also to make sure I'm not late for my appointments.

Now I understand why... Those types of drives the FE is amazing. Last week I went from Brampton to Markham on the 407 an averaged 4.2L/100km @ 110kph, door to door! It was a great feeling lol.

These cars are amazing on the hwy, just need a Hybrid sort of concept for the city driving and then they will be the ultimate fuel miser. :D

775km on my last tank. Not sure of the exact consumption, but I topped the tank and reset odo to 0. Filled up again @ 1/16 tank.

Somewhere around 3500km on car and mostly hwy driving. Sometimes I really push it too.

I'm thinking I wont hit the 1000km mark till summer when fuel is better and car is broken in more.

my mfd was showing 660km following a fillup the other day, and as i got it warmed up and ran 30km towards collingwood the mfd jumped up to 890km. doing 95km/hr or so.

the cold weather kills the FE. i've got 9000km on the new car.

My last tank I got 854.20km from 52.692L of Husky diesel. I have to say 50/50 city and hwy driving, probably more city because many highways in the greater Vancouver area aren't real highway.... eg. Westminster highway, Lougheed highway.

Vancouver to Winnipeg planned for the summer so I have high hopes of some high milage tanks!

Hmm. In summer I regularly get 900+ km out of my 2.0T Passat's tank. Of course it's 70 L. At a steady 100 km/h I can just hit 1000 km on a tank with 60 km left to empty on the trip computer.

I've been tracking my f/e since my first tank, so here is where I stand so far. 90% Highway driving, speed limit is 100, I usually go around 110 kms/h going there and around 100 kms/h back.

6.2 L/100 is a bit disappointing for that kind of driving. I'm actually actively looking for a new car (my wife would get the B6 wagon and I would get something more efficient for commuting). I can do better than that with our B5.5 TDI, and in that kind of driving, I'd be averaging around 7.2 L/100 km in the 2.0T; at 100 I can average 7.0. My highway mix, like you, is about 90% hwy, 10% city/suburban.

I have a question about the onwers manuals that say don't go below 1/4 tank, as that can suck contaminants into the fuel system: If you've owned the car since new, and always draw the tank down to virtually empty, would that be an issue? I assume contaminants would only build over time up if you always left the tank 1/4 full?

It is disappointing - though I've only recently been doing the slower drive home.

I've discovered that the way the Canadian government tests the cars for highway is totally unrealistic.

The US fuel rating is more realistic, 42 MPG Highway and 30 MPG City, 34 MPG Combined.

If you take the Canada rating of 4.6 L/100 km Highway and 6.7 L/100 Km City it works out to 51 MPG and 35 MPG.

So if you average out the US rating for my driving I should be getting 40.8 MPG, or about 5.8 L/100 km. Best tank so far has been 5.9 L/100 km and I've had some extremely cold temps. I am looking forward to the improvement with spring and my 17" tires.

To be fair to the CDN government, I have never had any trouble meeting or beating the ratings, at least in summer, with: B5.5 TDI (rated 5.7, achieved 5.4), A4 Jetta (ALH), rated 4.4 achieved 4.3, and B6 Passat with 2.0T gasser (rated 6.8, achieved 6.4). The exception seems to have been our 1.9 PD TDI in our wrecked Jetta wagon. It struggled to meet the rating and I note that for 2006 TC changed the rating upwards to 5.2; that it was able to beat. The important criteria for beating the rating was driving at no more than 100 km/h.

Here is the highway test:

The highway test simulates a 16-km trip with an average speed of 77 km/h (48 mph) and a top speed of 97 km/h (60 mph). The test runs for about 13 minutes and does not include any stops. However, the speed varies to simulate conditions on the highway and on rural roads. The test begins from a hot engine start.
The highway test can be summarized as follows:
Test Cell Temperature 20°-30°C (68°-86°F) Time 765 seconds (12 minutes, 45 seconds) Length 16 km (10 miles) Top Speed 97 km/h (60 mph) Average Speed 77 km/h (48 mph)
If you think about Canada, and the speed limits on the highways (100 or 110 km/h) this "highway" test is total BS!

My last tank was 818 K and it took 45 L at fill up. The gauge was still showing 1/4 tank. It's a bit cold but things are warming up so it should get even better.

It is sucidal to drive at 100 KM/Hr on the 400 series Hwy in Toronto/GTA when the general traffic is going at 120~140 KM/Hr!
When I tried keeping at 100 KM/Hr on the Right lane I see little Yaris/Civic and even Smart cars zooming past me on the Middle & Left lanes!

Despite driving between 120~140 KM/Hr my TDI seeps fuel at 6.1L/100KM which is excellent FE IMO.
BTW the speedo is too optimistic by about 10 KM/Hr according to my Garmin GPS so the actual speed is around 110~130 KM/Hr.

I love the torque and performance of the TDI and do not deliberately drive for max FE as I tend to be in a hurry to get to my next appointment so I push it quite hard.
Yet I typically get >840 KM per tank so I am very pleased with my TDI.
