I haven't done a clutch job yet, but i plan on taking this one apart and learning all i can from it. Bases on the research i've done so far, make sure the engine and tranny are supported from up top or below. Also make sure you have some sort of tool to counter hold the flywheel if you are swapping them. I picked up an mk4 with the dual mass that is slipping in 5th gear, so i'm putting a Luk solid flywheel on. Just thought i'd mention that.....

Anthony, long time, how is the sidekick going?. That would be a great help with the tools, any chance you have any thing for a clutch flywheel counter hold. I've seen guys cutting off a piece of flywheel and putting a bolt through it and it works great to hold it in place.

I lost all my contacts last year, so i'll pm you my number. Just send me a txt when is best to pick up the tools. We can do a coffee and talk about the kick...

Counter hold tool, I had a spare piece of steel, and drilled a hole in it, and used a bolt to hold it in place as it jammed the flywheel. Once you are under there it's not hard to figure out.

Thanks Craig, excellent pic. I took the tranny out yesterday. I had one of those small tire bars. I cut one of the nibs off and put some washers around it for clearance, also bent the washers a bit to fit around the tire bar. I used the 18mm tranny bolt at the top. Seems to be holding. I like your home made tool. This is a new experience for me with the clutch job. So far everything is going good. Tranny is a bit heavy when you are under the car on your side with your arms stretched out and elevated. :) My dream is to one day own a hoist. Not sure how much the gear oil weighs, but i left it in there.

I'm going to bump this thread, in the hopes that someone close to Scarborough might be able to lend me the crank locking tool to torque the bolt.

I've tried to fabricate some holding tools, but they all failed. I don't have the proper equipment to do such a job.

First stage torque was easy 88ft/lbs. 2nd stage torque, no matter what i try, there is too much play on the crank to torque. I was only able to do about 25 degrees. Not the 90 that is called for.

TORQUE ALH CRANK BOLT with hockey pucks-works great

Update for anyone that might encounter this type of job and don't have the tools or don't work on tdi's too frequently to invest on those expensive metal pieces to counterhold that high torque crank bolt.

I got a tip online about using hockey puck on the crank counter weights. I've seen some members online use a wooden hammer, and 2x4's. So i decided to drop the oil pan again and place 2 hockey pucks on the middle crank counter weights. I was then able to gorilla the bolt to about 105 degrees. I stopped there as i didn't want to break the bolt..etc.

Anyways, that oil pan on the tranny side with those 2 hidden 10mm bolts are a pain in the butt. I still have to put the oil pan back on. Have to head into work soon. So hopefully that might help anyone else.

I wish i would have seen the hockey puck tip sooner, oh well....I'm back on track now.

I just use a crow bar between flywheel tooth.. a bolt in the bellhousing and the frame. Not sure why this was so difficult for you

There's a slot in the flywheel/PP that allows easier access to those two bolts, rotate until you find it.... That and a wobble bit should is all you should need.

I saw the diy that chitty did. I rotated while i was under there with the led light. I didn't see any gap. I changed the DMF flywheel to a solid Valeo kit. I'm thinking that might be why???. I will have another look maybe tonight or in the morning.

Thanks

steve6 : I didn't want to wedge anything into the flywheel. With the high torque, didn't want to damage anything. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I would have done both jobs if i had all the parts when i did the clutch. That would have made it easier, as i used the tip craig had about locking down the flywheel.
