I’m curious if anyone reading this has gone from a diesel NMS Passat to a gas one (mostly interested in the five cylinder 2.5 liter engine), and what your impressions are. I have 164K on my 2013 TDI now, and I’m trying to decide if picking up a low mileage gasser as a backup/eventual replacement might be worth doing.

I guess 12-13 have the 2.5/3.6 option and 14+ have 1.8/3.6 option.

I guess the 2.5 is simpler than the 1.8T

I still prefer the 2.0 TDI myself.

Our 2012 Comfortline (CDN car) has been 99.9% trouble free. At 160K km the vacuum pump is leaking, but not enough to fix. I had to clean the MAP sensor once to clear a persistent check engine light. Just replaced the center muffler last year. Failures have been the rear muffler (broken baffle), driver sunvisor courtesy light, both warranty, left side temp blend motor X2, one under warranty and broken drivers door inner handle cable a couple of years ago, though I suspect that was actually an improper reassembly of the door card when it was in the body shop for a parking lot scrape.

My wife's 2014 Passat SE has the 2.5L. This was the last year of the 2.5L. Her car has around 90K miles on it now. Only one issue in all those miles, the air pump and air pump control valve had to be replaced. That's the only engine related issue we have had.

My girlfriend has a rabbit with the 2.5. Over 2 years and 20 000 kilometers its been trouble free. It had that vacuum pump hose problem but I taped it up in the parking lot. Only real issue is the rust.
