Anyone else have their OEM Continental tires disintegrate yet?

Our 2011 Jetta TDI came with OEM Continental ContiProContact 205/55R16 91H. Began to experience vibration at highway speeds. Had the tires balanced and it helped for a while. Then the vibration returned. I removed all of the tires this past weekend and examined them. The outside tread area is beginning to disintegrate. There are chunks of rubber missing in that area of the tires.
My mileage is worsening and the tires are sounding louder. There is only 25K miles on the car and the OEM tires are stamped with a 40K mile tread wear indicator. Anyone else have similar issues with their OEM Continentals?
I have a set of 4 Pirelli Cinturato P7 in mind from tire rack.

I'm a bit surprised to hear that. I always thought that out of the three OEM tires, the Conti ProContacts were the best of the three.

I had the Conti's too, had to replace them in the low 20s also. Had little tread depth left. Replaced them with Michelin MXV4s Primacy. They have been great

There are just too many to list....
Can't say I have seen too many problems with them, but I don't think I would have expected them to go as long as some others.

Your owner's manual packet should have the tire warranty booklet inside (tires are under their own, separate warranty) you may contact them and inquire about any coverage.

How often were you rotating them? Rotation is key for them to last.

I like Continentals, but the ProContacts have nothing "Pro" about them, IMHO they're Conti's bottom tire (The reviews seem to follow that). I "lucked" out I guess... mine were out of round and replaced at 600 Miles with Extremecontact DWS's (which are great tires, and look like new with 16K on them).

I had Pros on my 08' Audi A6, they also only lasted 25K, but then again the A6 Quattro ate tires (one of the problems with quattro... great system, but does take it out on tires).

Bought this TDI from Carmax 3 weeks ago. Previous maintenance unknown at this point in time.

One would assume that if the car was maintained with the included maintence they would have been rotated every 10k.

For all you know the tires on it aren't even the ones that came with the car =-).

Yes, I've heard of places swapping tires between cars on a lot to increase the $$$ price.

I have almost 50 k on the hankooks. They have been a great tire.
I have the Hankook's too.

How are they on the snow? Or do you use winter tires? TireRack gives very low scores to the Hankooks on snow/ice.

Ran my Golf TDI for 33.4K miles on ContiPro's - no vibration issues. I did develop a slow leak, but not enough to identify or require patching. Perhaps that is the kind of disintegration you are referring to? Tires seemed to deliver decent grip wet and dry. They do what they are supposed to do as far as I can see.

As a driver, I didn't push them by aggressive driving or hard cornering, so I have no idea how they would have faired under higher loads.

They have been better then I expected on snow and ice. Now water traction is awful and borderline dangerous if you were unaware of lack of wet tracksoin. I had primacy tireson a 04 passat wagon, and performed well in all area's including in wet and water. Now hankooks will get me to the end of this summer and that's it for them. Primacy will most likely be my replacement tire.

The outside area of the tread pattern (near sidewalls) have small chunks of rubber coming off. By small I mean 1/8 - 1/4 inch sized, or 2 - 5 mm. There is plenty of tread depth left on the tires. It appears to be a manufacturing defect.
Of course I don't know if the original owner abused them or not. I just bought this TDI 3 weeks ago from Carmax, original owner from Oklahoma somewhere. The car is in remarkable condition, showroom looking. I can't imagine someone that took that good care of their car would abuse it.
I usually go with Michelins. Had good luck with them and my brother works at a Michelin plant in Canada. The "Defender" tires have a 90K tread warranty. Anyone have those? I have Michelins on my 03 Jetta and Bridgestones on the 2012 Jetta. I am leaning toward the Michelins or Pirelli's. Haven't decided yet.

did you look at the MXV4 tire ?
I did, the mxm4 gives up some wear for better traction, depends on your priorities, I personally would choose the 500 treadwear with aa rated traction over the 620 treadwear and a rated traction.

I had ran the mxv4 years ago on Honda accords and i was happy with them, tires have changed a lot since then and I have no experience with the mxm4 so just going by the numbers.

I had a set of 245/40/18 pilot super sports on my 2010 accord for 30k and I would have ran them another 5k but I was handing the car over to my 16 year old so I replaced them with 245/45/18 super sports and chose the same tire
For my new tdi passat, much improved handling, car feels lighter as the load rating on the tires are almost 300 lbs. more

Yikes - Sounds pretty scary. Perhaps the original owner never checked tire pressure and ran them significantly under inflated for a period?

Not the Continentals but I had the Bridgestones (I'll have to check which ones later on.) Had a sidewall blowout at 27,000 miles. That makes my 2nd set of Bridgestones I've ever owned have a blowout. My first blowout was on my Expedition.

I just had Toyo Proxes 4Plus put on the car today. I love a good set of rubbers!

My stoc k Conti's lasted about 55k miles before the vibration began and within a week, the outer shoulder on one of the fronts disintegrated. I've now had the Pirelli P7 Cintauratos on for about two weeks and I'm really happy with them. Quieter, Stickier and a slight mpg increase.

Finally got a set of new Pirelli's installed this week. Sams Club had a deal I couldn't refuse. The Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season's for $110 per tire with free installation. Sale good through Aug 12 if you are interested. I am very pleased with them. The vibration I had with the stock tires above 80MPH is gone and they have remarkable handling characteristics. Handles like new again.

I just purchased ContiPros for my Jetta. I had Contis on before - but they weren't the Pro. These seem to be much quieter and "squishier" than the ones I had on the car as OE. However, in looking at some reviews, and even some of the threads on the forums, I'm developing a slight case of buyers remorse - perhaps I'd be better off if I worried less, and drove more, eh?

I am at 33k miles and the stock Contis are completely bald on the outside edges through the middle of the tires. Inside edges still have a few 32nds left. I don't baby my car and if I had a little more camber they would have lasted longer.
I wouldn't say they are "bad" tires, but they aren't what I would have bought given a choice.

How are your Pirelli's holding up?
