I've got the loader and had the EGR delete program uploaded. Mods: BSM replacement and Westfalia Tow kit.

I searched for this a couple years ago. Especially since the alligator/qloader tunes were available from a local guy. But it seems not many with BHW have gator tunes and that most with passats here have RC tunes...

I am holding out for an RC tune at TDIfest...crosses fingers

Any reason not to use an Alligator tune? Jeff (RC) doesn't come to Kansas, but there is an Alligator dealer nearby.

BS was done before I bought it.....yeah me!

I like the q-loader/flashzilla concept due to my geographic location. Mark at Malone has been very helpful so far with all my questions. Has some cars with some impressive numbers. Is going to take look at before and after logs and give it a slight tweek if it needs it.

Revo/Giac had never offered to do that with any of the 1.8t's I had!

removing your ECU and sending it off to get an RC treatment is an option too.

anyone had a positive or negative experience with this? Distance shouldn't matter too much if it isn't.

I would think for low elevation flatlanders, sending your ECU should be an option. I'm leary at 5000' and higher...

OK I'll bite. Why does altitude make a difference? I am at 4500' where I live and I am thinking of sending in my ECU.

Less air density could make a low altitude tune not so good at higher altitudes in general. I'm no expert though.
Aren't you pretty close to a tuner, passatpete? I would get one in person if I could, at my conditions.

ECU compensates for Altitude

Its already built-in for atmospheric pressure. Its when you changes so many variables that it creates problems. RC has a High Altitude tune and I am sure Alligator can tune for that also.

I have an 04 passat variant...no BS or unchaining yet. I installed the Alligator tune at 80k and have been very happy with the results. I can't remember the exact numbers but at a dyno day last year my car dynoed about 3hp higher than an RC tune that had just been done. Not sure if it was an RC 1 or 2. Like you I did it because Jeff is not always available. I think if I was closer or willing to wait I would have used Rocket. But no regrets.

I've got a QLoader w/ tune from Charlie. Pretty happy with it, good power, no additional smoke. I've had a few reflashes with it as the various ECU updates have come out too (steel glowplug was the latest). I live at 5000 ft and go up to Summit County all the time (9-10,000'), no issues w/ the tune there.

Good to know.
Same low smoke at 5 and 10k?
How about cold starts?
Do you need a vag-com to run logs to get the right tune?

cold starts are just as miserable before and after the tune. That's easily the biggest disappointment I have with my B5. Cold starts are much worse at 9000ft. I have a tdiheater and that helps a lot with that issue.

I haven't noticed a difference in smoke w/ elevation.

I don't know if the logs are required to get a tune (I already had vagcom when I bought the tune, so I did take logs)- I think any tuner will want to verify that the engine is running w/o any issues before putting a tune on it. Contact Charlie, he'll usually respond the same day.
