Can't wait for the "505.01 is a conspiracy" brigade to start complaining about this.

(Not like we didn't know this was coming, the V10 TDIs already said 505.01 or 507.00...)

Old news :p

It's for Treg only, all other PD's are still 505.01.

The deal with the upcoming engines (Jetta) requiring 507.00 is new, although unsurprising. I think within a couple of years, the 505.01 oils will be obsolete and it will be 507.00 for all TDI's.

Don't know about the rest of the world. But in my little warm corner I've seen nothing but ULSDF stickers for months. I'm speculating that 20% LSD could be big fleet and military use. It's my belief most of the LSD stickers seen on pumps are owners shielding themselves from possible failure of the 15ppm spec. I'm also positive there are old rusty muddy tanks in the ground which will not pass until they are cleaned or replaced.
I'll wish all those owners good luck.
Since I don't plan on loosing my 2004 model any time before I retire it's a moot issue for me. I just have to remember to pump in D2 and NOT gas. So far I'm batting 1000.

Perhaps obsolete at the dealerships.
You won't find me running an XW-30 oil in my car.
At least not until thousand of drivers run 800K miles on it. With no issues.
Call me old fashion. I like high viscosity. Other people have different expectations from their cars. I bought mine new so I wouldn't have to deal with what other people did with my car. For sure that's fickle.
I don't like the way my 505.01 shears down to almost a 30. 12.56 on my last 10K uoa. 12.5 being the cutof point.

Long_Range: In Europe, they've run quite a few collective miles on 5W30 and 0W30 oils in PD-TDIs, seeing as they're required for the flexible service system. ;) (506.01 and 507.00)

High-ash oils can poison the particulate filter, NOx catalyst (if not urea-based), or SCR system (if urea based), just like 500ppm sulfur in diesel can.

But VW would probably specify an oil that would be downwardly compatible with the PD's special requirements, no?

Can anyone explain why the German VW oil chart that lists uses for 505.01, 506.01 and 507 explicitly states that the V10tdi only use 506.01 (both with and without DPF)?

Tom - I think that "German VW oil chart" is for German market consumption only, where all V10 TDI's are flexible service interval equipped. Since 505.01 is not a long-life oil spec, 505.01 is no good for German V10 TDI's. As far as 507.00, I suspect that the chart predates the availability of that oil, but I don't know.

As for 507.00 oil in my '06 Golf, I like the possibility, but I want to see some evidence that it is superior to 505.01 for a 10k OCI.

The chart says that 506.01 is to be used for both V10 and R5 tdi's with and without "long life" service (equipped with flexible service sensor), as well as with or without DPF.

The chart also has 507 applications listed (all other vehicles with DPF).

But this isn't the German market, this is the North American market, and our toerag uses 505.01 or 507.00. (506.01 is acceptable by virtue of being 505.01 compliant.)

On that note, isn't 507.00 compliant with 506.01?

Yes, E, everything is dumbed down (and potentially inappropriate) for the USA market.

If 505.01 or 507.00 were acceptable for the V10, why would it not show it on the charts

FWIW, 506.01 doesn't exist in the USA from VWoA's POV ;)

bhtooefr-
Do you think the German touareg differs from the N American market in terms of lubrication design? Why?

They have had the more advanced emissions equipment (DPF) over there for awhile, yet have continued to spec 506.01 for the R5 and V10. It may have something to do with the cam drive system used in these motors (gear driven vs belt). That's my theory anyways.

507 is compliant with 506.01 in all but the V10/R5 apps, from the Euro oil literature I've seen.

Doesn't the US-spec 06-07 Touareg have a NOx trap? Is it possible that the 506.01 poisons it somehow?

Guys, have there been previous instances where VWoA has recommended the wrong product

here is a clue from Lubro-Moly's TopTec 4200 oil:
Operational area on LM brit site said:
Special all season oil for all gasoline and diesel engines of the Audi and Volkswagen group. LIQUI MOLY recommend this product for vehicles for which Volkswagen specifications 500 00 / 501 01 / 502 00 / 505 00 / 505 01 / 503 00 / 503 01 / 506 00 und 506 01 (Exception R5 and V10 TDI-Motoren before 6/2006) are required.
Car manufacturer´s approval: ACEA A3/B4, VW 504 00/507 00
So perhaps bhtooefr is onto something that resulted in a change to these oil requirements sometime in the last year or so.

In either case, I would not use a 505.01 product in the V10/R5. And I would suggest that owners with pre-6/06 V10/R5 vehicles use 506.01.
