Another HPFP failure

Notice that it's not a fair comparison. 2011 is out less than a year or just a year. Give it another 2 years and compare how many fail with # of 2009 fails at this moment.
I agree that it's not a perfect comparison, but if you look at the number of 2010 models that had failures this time last year versus the number of 2011 models with failures so far, I believe the numbers do indicate that the 2011 models seem to have much higher reliability.

Really? How many 2011 TDIs have failed? I looked at this list in the lawsuit and almost all were 2009/2010. I think I saw maybe one 2011. Seems like the problem isn't as severe with the later models. I say this hopefully since I have a 2011 Golf TDI...
bahahaha!

You're kidding, right?

I remember when the 2010's came out and people were saying the 2010's were immune. Then when we saw several '10 failures, a guy came out and said he just got a Golf, and he saw no 2010 Golf failures. When we saw some Golf failures, we had some guy saying he didn't see any 2010 RED Golfs that failed.

The cycle repeats. Failures seem to happen from 12,000 - 45,000 miles. Until your MY is out for 2 years, I don't think you can make any intelligent assumptions on HPFP dependability.

With the way VW has been this whole time, you really expect anyone to believe that VW comped this is if there was bad fuel- seriously
That was the original poster's claim:
We had it towed in via roadside assistance. They told us it was a bad tank of diesel. Waited a week my wife gets a call simply stating the fuel pump was bad. After I changed my pants from soiling them, (not in a good way). I knew what this meant.

They explained they were replacing "alot of stuff" under warranty. I started naming parts and he kept saying yes. So I said thanks and hung up.

So what you're saying is that my 2011 Golf is immune because it's Reflex Silver? Awesome.

If it was a bad tank of fuel, it doesn't matter if you were running 2% bio, Stanadyne additive, or KY jelly before that bad tank of fuel...
I get that but are we not all susceptible to getting that same bad tank of diesel no matter how careful we are? The pump shouldn't be that sensitive, run rough maybe for a while but bomb itself is unacceptable.

Please keep us updated interested in the end results since you said it was giving some indication of problems before the failure. Seems most other failures were without warning.

So I notified the NHTSA about the failure and got an email in return. A non automated email to boot. I'll post an interesting line from the email.

I am currently assembling information for an ongoing investigation into your class of vehicle.

Woo sounds juicy.

kthackst....sorry to hear that you had a failure. Very glad to hear that York VW took care of you with no problems as that is where I bought my car. Next time I am there I am gonna ask if they had any hpfp failures and see if they lie to me.

I look forward to hearing what they tell you. My dealer denies there are any problems with the TDI HPFP. Even after I've sent links to the forum. They'll probably deny all knowledge. How does VWoA expect to grow it's market when they're in denial about a serious problem???

Then your dealer is either a liar or an idiot, and I'm not sure which is worse. It's one thing to say that they haven't experienced any problems first hand, but its something completely different if they put their fingers in their ears and go "na na na na na I can't hear you!". They can't just pretend a problem doesn't exist to try and make it go away.

You might want to find another dealership to do your warranty work for you.

Then give them the names of the dealers that have performed the warranty repair on a grenaded HPFP (a number of them have been named in the various HPFP threads) and ask your dealer to call them. I don't know anything about the details, but Bob King VW in Wilmington NC has performed a few, at least that is what the service writer told me when I inquired during my last service.

It's also one of my nearest dealerships (Yor VW) so I'd be fascinated to hear what they say, quietpeen!

And good luck, kthackst!

kthackst, I'd like to know your parting thoughts to the people on the forum who keep spouting "Drive more, worry less"

Would those people be willing to split the bill the next time the HPFP goes? :p

I have a mitsubishi GSX that I drive regularly that I employ that strategy. ~400hp AWD is really fun. The TDI is supposed to be my reliable car.

Wow! That is quite the list of parts. What would the cost of that repair be if not covered by warranty? Or should I even ask?

Thanks
Brett

Stop the drama - it is repaired and now it's time to go out and enjoy it!

I now have over 35,000 miles on my JSW and while I'm aware of the potential problem, I'm gonna just drive it and enjoy the awesome mileage and functionality of the car!

It's repaired for how long? You are aware there have been several cars with multiple failures?

So if they want to sell it , it's up to them, not drama.

I'm sure there will be no drama from you if this happens out of warranty right.

Congratulation on making it to 36,000 and I hope you see 1,000,000 more miles.

I bought this car because of it's supposed longevity and fuel efficiency not because I enjoy driving it. Although I do enjoy driving it not enough to have a potentional $8,000 - $10,000 bill over my head.

The cost of parts was $4600 alone not including labor. It took them over 3 days at $85-$125 shop rate labor (depending on difficultly) so up to or more than $3500 dollars in labor.

Just for the price of parts I could build 2-3 engines for my GSX. I have rebuilt engines, 3 in fact, I replaced almost every part in my GSX and what scares me about the HPFP is the cost of parts. $4600 is too much for me if one component fails. Bad fuel pump in my GSX and I am out $125.

All in all the TDI was intended to be kept for 20 years +, fuel sipping, economical vehicle. And right now it might only meet one of those expectations.
