So I take my car in for a SES light.....after charging me 90 bucks, they tell me that the car is 2 weeks out of warranty.....

This was about 2 weeks ago. Since I got the car back, Ive noticed a real slight whistling sound. I didnt think much of it, but today I decided to take a look.

I pop the hood and find the air filter is sticking out the side of the opened box.

The pissant at the dealership even told me it is time for a new air filter, so I know they checked.

Ive driven for pry 500 miles with an completly open air filter.....luckily not on any dirt roads....but still I have no idea if anything got sucked up.

I definetly plan to have a heart to heart with the dealership jackass, but what should I demand? Oil analysis?

This really sucks.

__. Yeah. I'd demand a new filter (once you screw around with them, they don't seal properly) and oil analysis.

Knowing VW's service departments reputation....Why didn't you check the car before you drove off? Or check it the moment something didn't sound right instead of driving 500 miles on it, before you looked?

To be honest the noise was very subtle......I was not sure if I had heard it before. The noise only came on at about 2000 rpm, most of my driving is freeway...so I didnt hear it much.

I know now that I should have checked everything, but the specific service that I went in for had nothing to do with my air filter. If it had I would have checked first off.

I looked at my receipt, I drove about 220 miles since the 'service.'

You'll be fine, I'm sure. Have a talk with them about it and try to get a new filter and install it yourself. If they make you feel comfortable and confident about the situation, great. If not, do not return to them for any service.

Do you check yourself after having surgery? I didn't think so.
These people are supposed to be PROFESSIONALS. They get paid that way anyway.

Murrietta Volkswagen.....An hour north of San Diego.

I spoke to the svc manager who seemed to think it was not a problem....big suprise.

I made him document it so that in the event of a future issue I at least let them know what happened. I think this may also merit a call to VW customer care.....ill see if they can be anything more than tits on a boar.

If you wanted to err on the safe side, you could change the oil and filter right away.

Matt,

I've checked out Capastrano VW and Classic VW in Escondido. They both hav been in business longer that Muretta VW. Classic is closer that Cap. so I guess they will get my business since Diamond Vly gave up the franchise Dec 31. Paster Mike certainly is satisfied with Classic.

If not satisfied, call VW customer line, speaking from my experience. After batting around with stealership for oil consumption in 2.0 engine. They ran around and damanded replacing PCV valve for $400ish...I called VW right away and explain the situation. 2 hours later, got a call from stealership stating that they would rebuilt the engine (replacing rings to be exact) for in warranty service. I'll not hesitate to call VW again in a heartbeat if stealership runs around with me again.

Thanks for the advice Robert! I think Ill be headed to classic if something else goes wrong.......C5, Im kicking myself.....I just was in Hemet on Friday.....I bought 165g of B99......If I had remembered, I would have swung by and dropped off some avocados!!!

I also called and spoke to the VW customer care line.....they seemed useless. Big suprise, the dealer that I asked to document all of this did nothing.

dirt kills diesels

New to this forum but had to post on this. I currently have 10 diesels of various types, (best is 06 jetta 2 weeks old). ANY dirt is very very hard on close tolerance engines. (John Deere indicates that a teaspoon of dust will trash an engine)
Example- I purchased a machine with an Izuzu 4JB1 4 cyl in it. The intake pipe was not tight and leaked from the filter to the engine. 421 hrs-new engine, completely shot.
So - open filter= VERY BIG DEAL. ML

Don't trust any dealer farther than you can throw them even the ones you think you can trust.

I'd have great relationship with my dealership for getting my golf service up til my 60k service when they told me my oilpan was leaking at the drain nut. The first tried to pawn it off on me or another service location (sorry not so luckly there buddy) then said it's 'normal wear and tear' for an oilpan to be stripped after 7 oil changes. Fine whatever, give me a quote I'll deal with it later. I drove to work, tried to drive home in the evening and the car wouldn't start. They screwed up the fuel filter change so it stopped sucking in diesel.

I had to get towed to the dealership, the service manager (only one left when I called) left 5minutes before the tow truck got there (IMO very unprofessional).

I called both the dealer and VW about the oil pan and opened cases. Both told me to shove off. I'm sorry but an oilpan if properly used doesn't strip after only 8 oil changes. Cost me $400 at my next oil change, I'm now using a different dealer. This one is overpriced so I think I'm going to look for another one again.

check your invoice for all oil changes, you should have been charged for a new oil drain plug at every oil change, this is required as per VW specs, also their is a proper tourqe spec, but knowing most dealer luboligest, they will use a air impact to remove and replace drain plug, and over toureqing will pull threads, from oilpan .look for a caring dealer that can do it right, or learn to do it yourself.

It's not a learning issue on my part, its that I'm not allowed to perform maintance at my condo, and while I was under warranty I wanted the proper paper trail incase I needed to get some serious work done.

I'm looking to buy a house to replace my condo this summer, so I'll be able to tinker some more in my own garage / driveway :)

With a topside extractor like the Pela, you can change your oil anywhere, including the parking lot down at Auto Zone.

Sounds about right. I brought mine in to get my TB changed.. Not only did they do the job completely wrong, but forgot to connect the compressor inlet (filtered air) pipe, my vacuum line for the master cylinder (had very crappy brakes), and my N75 valve.. There needs to be a checklist for after getting yoyur car back from a dealer.

Same thing happened to my Windstar a few years ago. I regretted not calling corporate, so you should call and document the call and who you speak to.
