So where can one buy a steel oil pan?

Here's what a good oil pan looks like:

Here's what mine looks like:

take one soft aluminum-alloy pan,
add spring thaw,
add a deep pothole buried in a puddle in the tire track
right beside an upheaval in the center of the pavement,
and one ends up with what I have. Yee haw.

That pan didn't last long. I only put it on 4 months ago.

No, I can't go buy the metal skid plate, my TDI engine is installed in a Rabbit.

put the metal guard from the 2.slow beetle on it, mine has taken a couple of nasty hits and I have banged it out and it is fine I went through 3 or 4 pans before I put this life saver on and no problems since.

Sorry to hear of your damaged oil pan...A rabbit (one with long ears not a car) told me that someone around here (fred's) is working up a potential repair method for the dreaded damaged oil pan syndrome....Should be covered under the emmisions equipmetn warrentees are far as I can tell.....dropping a gallon of oil every few hundred miles makes tailpipe stuff look like a joke....Rob M Concord, MA

Somthing tells me he's not still under warranty or that installing the engine in another vehicle will somehow void the warranty. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I am wondering why do you guys keep busting them oilpans all the time? Is it the design of the car? Or is it the driver flaw?

Driver flaw? How about night time driving, fog, rain, snow or whatever, and any one of so much possible road junk suddenly appears before your TDI. I'm lucky so far. No pan protector, but no unavoidable junk either. You must be lucky too. It sometimes has nothing to do with "flawed" driving. Just my opinion. /images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif DK

[/ QUOTE ]I did not miss it, the steel guard from the 2 liter on the beetle mounts to the block only but protects the pan, it does not matter what car it is in, I know this will solve his problem totally I bottomed out with it going about 85 on a back road in VT, took the guard off, banged it out and put it back on. you will have to cut a notch for it to fit on a jetta engine though

Got the guard, got the bits, got it all installed.
(never done too good in english...)

Looks great, fits good, needed a 1/2" spacer on the front
to take it off the pan, no problem.

I will worry no more.

For those who don't want to spend the $500 on the metal
skid plate, spend the $50 on the pan guard.

It's an OEM part for the New Beetle.
Take the part number ( 06A 103 660A ) to the dealer, and have them get one for you. Or, there is always IMPEX.

edit to fix typo on part number

Oops, typo. The part number is
06A 103 660A. (Gee Dave, it's right there in the picture, how can you get it wrong?)

Impex comes up with version A, and version AB.
I don't know the difference.

The 'bits' I ended up with would be #37, #38, and #(39).
Though some #40s and maybe a #35 and #36 would've also been nice.

The guard attaches to the bottom of the block with two
plastic rivets and two bolts. The rivets are both on the back, and one bolt goes on the back, one on the front.
There are holes in the block for the #38 grommets, and the
threaded holes already exist for the bolts.

There is an opening in the guard for the oil drain, and
there is also an opening for the wiring to come out for the
oil level sensor.

I didn't have a camera with me, so I took no pictures, but
the guard is nice and heavy. I don't expect to bash any
more oil pans.

Does the plastic belly pan fit over this oil pan guard or do you have to leave it off?

I think it depends on how close the plastic pan sits to the engine. The metal guard is only 1/4-1/2" off the aluminum oil pan. I'd assume there would be sufficient space.

Am I correct in the assumption it will work on an 04 also? Smashing the oil pan is a major concern of mine, I was contemplating the dieselgeek skid plate, but according to them it sits lower than stock, so I'd lose even more clearance. I may also go the route of a lift kit, in addition to an oil pan guard.
I realize it's a little off topic, but does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts about a lift kit for a NB?

I understand the technical reasoning behing the lift kit...

..but looks-wise, unless you live on a farm, or are making a dune buggy, i just don't get it.

Buy an F-250 and put a lift where it will look good.

I traded in my F series (04 F150, sweet sweet truck, horrible gas mileage) for the Beetle. The stuff I could pass over in the truck will rip the oil pan right off this little thing. Remember, I have a Beetle which has 4" of clearance at best. I'm not talking raising it a foot or anything, maybe to get another 4-6 inches. I'm going to call a place in the burbs and see what they have to say.

I need to ask a question, the parts listed above only show 1 N0147203 bolt, and one N0115608 washer, but Dave says there are two bolts and two rivets/grommets. Does this parts list need to be ammended to show two bolts and washers? And which bolt is needed the #39 or the #(39)?

I'll try to get some pix for a how to when I do this.

CoolWht and I did this on his car at Hondo's gtg last weekend. It was not easy, mostly b/c of the significant amount of trimming we had to do to make it fit next to the alternator.

Here is the parts list:
grommet (2) 06A 103 638 C
plastic rivet (2) 06A 103 952
washer (2) N011 560 8
bolt (1) N014 720 3
bolt (1) N014 723 6
sleeve (1) 038 103 825
pan guard (1) 06A 103 660 AB

We never did figure out what grommet (1) 028 103 638 C was for.

Perhaps the pan covers that end in "A" vs "AB" fit differently?

I would use bolt (1) N014 720 3 (shorter) on the front, and
bolt (1) N014 723 6 (longer) on the back.

zanzabar, I assembled my parts from the first parts list, so I still need to get that extra bolt and washer. But what about another sleeve (1) 038 103 825 - it looks like the second bolt also needs one of those; does it?

Shouldn't the parts list read quantity (2) for that?

(I haven't gotten under the car yet, otherwise it would probably be obvious)
