Yesterday an animal(I don't know what) crawled up into my engine bay. With that plastic cover under that I don't know how, but it did. I parked the car outside so said animal could be on its merry way. Anyway today on my short drive to work the check engine light is now on and i did notice that the outside temp is not displaying now. Car seems to run fine, but i'm gonna have to take it to the dealer..............think it will be covered under warranty or will they try to make me pay for any repairs needed?

Under the engine cover seems to be a favorite place for critters (mice) to build nests. They like to harvest pieces of material from the engine bay. It probably chewed through a wire, hence the temp will not display. I'd recommend having mouse traps always set in your garage to prevent this. It can get expensive.

I am def. going to put mouse traps in the garage, but this was definitely bigger than a mouse....no way a mouse would make as much noise as this........and judging by the size of poop that is in the corner of the garage, it is not small....lol

there is no reason that any critter damage should be covered by warranty.

Should VW pay for the wax if your car get covered with tree sap?

I wouldn't mention the critter and just see what happens. Worst case is that you'll have to pay a diagnostic fee and then find out what needs to be fixed.

Have you read any of the articles about the problems some airport long term parking lots are having with rabbits (not the VW kind). It seems that many car makers (not sure about VW) are now using soy based plastics as insulation on their wires as a ROHS solution. Well, it turns out that this soy based insulation appears to be delicious to rabbits. Many cars have had considerable damage done to their electrical systems by these hungry rabbits. There also could be other animals who find this insulation tasty. I feel that this will be a growing problem if manufacturers continue to use this type of wire insulation.

Have Fun!

I have not but that is crazy. I know I will not keep my garage door open any more if I'm not in or right by the garage.

Sorta glad I have an old lady with a handful (not crazy cat lady handfuls) of cats running around a few houses up. Only animals I see in my yards are deer, who only wants my garden, and the occasional 'coon, who only wants my garbage/dog's food.

At the dealer right now...gonna cost about $180 to fix...the ambient air sensor harness was ripped right out.....they are fixing it right now. The guy said it doesn't look like the wires were chewed at all...so the critter must have freaked out trying to get out of there and got caught up in that bunch of wires
