It is perfectly fine to split a case of twelve quarts or four gallon containers of Amsoil - the extra cost is only ten cents per quart. Many people seem interested in using the Series 3000, 5w-30 for it's cold temp properties, but feel it's expensive to use all the time. The price difference in the Series 3000 and 15w-40 synthetic is about $3.00/qt ($12.00/gallon), so splitting a four gallon case saves you about $22.00. You will see the greatest benefits from using the 5w-30 diesel oil in subfreezing temperatures, compared to using an xw-40 oil. It is really not necessary to use the Series 3000, with a pour point of -60F, when the ambient temps are 100F-150F higher. There are also some folks who simply don't feel comfortable using a 0w-30/5w-30 in warm weather, no matter how much Geoff beats on them.

Additionally, even with a PAO/Ester synthetic, it is hard to optimize an oil to perform equally well at hot and cold temp extremes. If we compare the high/low temp properties of the two aforementioned oils to a well known 5w-40 synthetic (we'll call it "D1"), you can see what I mean:

High Temp Evaporation (NOACK test)
(250C for 1 hr)

D1, 5w-40: 10.0% weight loss
Amsoil 15w-40: 6.6% weight loss

Low Temp Flow (CCS Viscosity @ -13F)

D1, 5w-40: 3200 Centipoise
Series 3000, 5w-30: 2566 Centipoise

Finally, there are any number of ways you can split these cases of quarts/gallons, to tailor this idea to your particular situation ....

wait a second. . .

you mean that at normal operating temps you will be gunkin up the intercooler or what ever the ccv bypass gets dirty 40% faster using D1 instead of Series 3000?

WOW, heck that is quite a bit more oil loss.

You know D1 might not even pass the VW standards with a NOACK that high.

Geesh I figured everyone had succumed to my browbeating already - gotta get back to working on the non-believers.

Geoff,

The volatility data I posted was for the 15w-40 ...the NOACK number for the Series 3000 is 8.9%. For the Amsoil 10w-40 diesel oil it's 7.0%. Generally speaking, an oil with a lighter basestock will evaporate more easily. One more reason to avoid 5w-50 oils!
