Am I one of few pre-scandal owners making money on my car?

2015 A3 purchased 5/15 with 8800 miles for $31,000

Currently has 30,800 miles. Buyback value $39,777

After Goodwill $1000, total gain not including deduction for taxes paid is $9777.

Is this type of windfall uncommon?

I decided to upgrade a few months ago to a 2015 A8L TDI with 21,000 miles for $57,000 (MSRP $95,000). .

No, typical of many of us with later model years, especially those of us who bought the car well below MSRP.

Of course, the real way to capitalize is to continue driving it for two years while still under factory warranty.

If I ever get my offer I will be making about $5,000. Bought my 2010 with a cracked DPF and intake codes, the previous owner didn't want to mess with it and was out of warranty. I stuck in about $1200 and enjoyed it for a year.

Now it's parked waiting for the buyback.

Our 2013 JSW will be netting us $11,200 after 3 years of ownership.

My 2009 will be netting me $5,000.

16k total for both cars

Also, just got my 2013 payment EFT'ed to my bank this morning. That took about 3 days and the chase letter came within 36 hours.

2009 will be 24 hours at 11:30, so i expect that one soon.

I'm getting back slightly more than I financed, but not more than I paid. That's the aspect of this process that I can't complain about. :D

Most people should be making money. I bought my car the month before the scandal broke out (just lucked out with timing there) and am getting over $11k on top of the price I paid for the car originally.

The best way to save money is by keeping your car. You go right back down that rabbit hole on the purchase of a new car.

If you are concern about the fix you don't have to get done.

Registration of 2.0 Liter Subject Vehicles

The Beneficiary certifies, for the benefit of the parties to the Consent Decree (including the Settling Defendants) and the owners from time-to-time of 2.0 Liter Subject Vehicles, that upon becoming a Beneficiary, the Beneficiary:

(a) Shall not deny registration to any Subject Vehicle based solely on: i. The presence of a defeat device or AECD covered by the resolution of claims in the Consent Decree; or ii. Emissions resulting from such a defeat device or AECD; or iii. The availability of an Approved Emissions Modification or the Buyback, Lease Termination, and Owner/Lessee Payment Program.

(b) Shall not deny registration to any Subject Vehicle that has received an Approved Emissions Modification based solely on: i. The fact that the vehicle received the Approved Emissions Modification; or ii. Emissions resulting from the modification (including but not limited to the anticipated emissions described in Appendix B to the Consent Decree); or iii. Other emissions-related vehicle characteristics that result from the modification; or iv. The availability of an Approved Emissions Modification or the Buyback, Lease Termination, and Owner/Lessee Payment Program.

(c) May identify 2.0 Liter Subject Vehicles as having received, or not received, the Approved Emissions Modification on the basis of VIN-specific information provided to the Beneficiary by the Settling Defendants.

(d) Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Beneficiary may deny registration to any Subject Vehicle on the basis that the Subject Vehicle fails to meet EPA’s or the Beneficiary’s failure criteria for the onboard diagnostic (OBD) inspection; or on other grounds authorized or required under applicable federal regulations (including an approved State Implementation Plan) or under Section 209 or 177 of the Clean Air Act and not explicitly excluded in subparagraphs 9(a)-(b).

Maybe most people with 2015s. The scandal, however, impacts vehicles as far back as MY 2009.

I guess I should have clarified. I did not buy new. I bought a 2011 the month before the scandal news became public.
