My 2001 Jetta has decided to be needy again. Here's what I've faced in the last week or so.

1: Pulled the original turbo and replaced it with a $700 ebay turbo, because there was in and out play and lots of it, I also shortly after discovered that the housings were cut up pretty bad..
2: motor ran fine for two days, as the new turbo was breaking in.
3: day 3 I was experiencing a misfire, that would be my best description, at about 2000-2400 RPM. Massive amounts of white smoke until i left that RPM range.
4: suddenly the misfire goes away, and runs fine.
5: now the turbo won't actuate.

It's not going into the limp mode RPM wise, but i will be plugging VCDS in. where should I start looking within VCDS?

You should start by returning that ebay turbo and refurbish the OEM unit.

Well, I've figured out what was wrong. I scanned it with VCDS and came up with P1556. So I'll be replacing vacuum lines and deleting some of the EGR stuff since the valve and cooler are gone. I also should probably put a new MAF in as well since it came up with an implausible signal code.

As for the turbo, it wasn't the issue. I would have rebuilt the OEM unit, however the housings were pretty cut up, which is why I went aftermarket.
