My original green 2000 tdi, with 547,000 kms on it blew the output differential on the passenger side. Engine is out of a 2003, and with an estimated 340,000 kms on it, running strong. Tranny wasn't as strong.

Cost of a replacement tranny today, any ideas? Otherwise, parting out may be the next step.

Did the pin come out of the diff and smash the case?

If so, I have an 02J transmission with a good case and a diff that stripped bolts (easy fix) - you can have it if you are up for cobbling a good transmission together out of two.

Too many.
Bank on about $450 for a tranny if you shop around plus 4 hrs labour and anything else that breaks taking it apart....:)

The old green girl has been a great car, but it's time. I will try to sell the engine whole, it's running well, and timing belt only has 15,000 k on it. Both my boys have driven it, so the interior is pretty well baffed. Only good remove able body part, drivers side front fender is in good shape. Everything else shows the normal wear you would expect with more than 1/2 a million klicks.....

These are old cars, and while hi k,s are normal, those parts are not worth the money for such old vehicles. I am happy working on and keeping a car running, but 400$$ plus labor for a car that is at the end of its rope with an unknown hi k part.....better odds at the casino. Metal for weight and no storage is a better deal. Good luck with your sale.

I agree. As much as we enjoyed our mk4 old Golf, there comes a point when the combination of age and normal wear/tear make it no longer cost effective to keep them on the road. When repairs start approaching the value of the car, it's done IMHO.

Some people are just too greedy and expect to get top dollars for their used parts, even though the cars that go on are starting to worth almost nothing. Some of the junkyards are like this and they have parts sitting on the shelves forever. Others discount them as they get older and the demand drops for expensive parts.

Part it out and make a bit of beer money.

My son wants the engine and ecu for his silver one.....sell the skid plate and some rims. Rest goes to the junker. If the body was in better shape perhaps, but this one has been abused by my boys the last 2 years. Been a great car tho, I am sad to see it go.
