ALH intermittent power fade

My stock manual 2001 Jetta has an intermittent problem with inconsistent power under load. If I'm climbing a hill, e.g., the car will sometimes lose a bit of power for a second or two and then return to normal power. Whether I'm trying to maintain consistent speed or, more so, trying to accelerate, it'll cycle between typical power and then fade and then typical power again repeatedly. I replaced the turbo for a different problem not that long ago; the injectors are relatively new, as is the N75; I checked the IP quantity adjustor for full sweep and bumped the IQ up to about 3.8 mg (it was just about 3.0 before the bump); the timing is set to slightly advanced. I have an IP case pressure relief valve on order, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas of what else I can check. No CELs at present. Many thanks in advance.

For some reason I think I had the EGR off not too long ago, but I'll check again. Do you know if a clogged intake usually causes consistently low power? It's the pulsing/cycling of the power fade that has me stumped.

I took the intake off less than 150K miles ago and thoroughly cleaned it.

More than likely consistent low power if clogged, but it could masquerade as any number of power issues esp if you aren't deleted. It was just a simple suggestion that's easy to check. 150k miles is enough to accumulate significant CBU. Also check your air intake system. Starting with pre-filter shorkel.

How do your MAF sensor 'actual' readings compare to the 'requested' values during these episodes? ( VCDS group 3 in the engine controller.)
See if you can find the VW part number on your MAF sensor. If the last 3 numbers are 461 with no suffix letter C, then you have the original piece of junk that the car came with.
038906461C is the latest update part number for the MAF sensor. Preferably Bosch brand.

You said yours is new, but I experienced the same symptom before replacing N75.

Thanks for all your advice! It seems to have gone away, but I'll have to stress test it some more. The only things I've done so far: cleaned the snow screen (it wasn't too bad); replaced the air filter (also not too bad or too old); replaced the case pressure valve on the IP (the inner sleeve had dropped a little). Voltage and resistance on the N75 were both good, and the turbo seems fine and responsive (it's relatively new). I had replaced the vacuum lines within the past year, and the vac pump is relatively new. The EGR and intake are clean. I replaced the accelerator pedal/TPS assembly a year or two ago because it was completely cutting out. If the problem returns I'll check back in put VCDS on it and a vac gauge. Thanks again!

You need to take logs 😁 011-001. And 011-001-003 since you have a silly maf. Egr can clog quicker than you think. Life is so much better when you delete egr and maf

I thought I'd check back in. The problem returned. I tested the N75 at the turbo actuator line end with VCDS - everything checked out fine (consistently 25 inHg when on, 0 when off). MAF testing showed a big enough difference between specified and actual throughout much of the RPM range, with nothing above 420 actual even as specified climbed up to 850. I have the new Bosch housing (038906461C) but replaced the element with a Pierburg 3 years ago. I just ordered a new Bosch. Thanks for the tips!

that's a shame :p could hve put that money towards a good maf-delete tune, but whatever :) myself - i can't stand seeing so many people deal with maf problems, spend money on mafs, the time the spend diagnosing it, only to just be back to "normal" when you could have better. :)

when egr is deleted, there's no reason for the MAF. MAF is really only used for egr calculations. once egr is out, you can do just as good smoke limiter using map as with maf. most tune smoke limiters aren't even done "right" anyway. it's really a bunch of hype. most people with a stage of tune are not happy with a conservative smoke limiter anyway, and it hardly smokes anymore anway (when all else is right). steady state cruising etc, MAF does nothing, zero. its just reading in values but there's nothing in the tune that is doing anything about it. it's not somehow making the car more efficient, it's not doing anything for high altitude control.

so why not have one less finicky sensor? the map sensor seems to be pretty robust. i haven't run a maf in my two primary drivers in 10 yrs.

i should have explained more - the "smoke limiter" is simply reducing fueling during a fraction of a second as turbo spools. this is in pedal-mashing conditions. when you mash the pedal, many things happen. but the smoke limiter is one of them, and it simply reduces the fueling based on current airflow (or boost) to be more reasonable so you don't get a bunch of smoke. if you're cruising along at 10mg fuel 2000rpm, and slam on the pedal, it will reduce the fuel allowed until air flow or boost gets up a bit before actually putting out the full driver request amount of fuel.

when you're cruising, the smoke limiter (and maf) is doing nothing

I just replaced the MAF sensor (latest design Bosch) and got the following numbers. The highest actual is 575; before replacement the highest actual was 425. What I'm wondering about is the disparity between specified and actual as the RPMs climb from 3.4K through 4.6K: specified goes up to 850 but actual is 465 through that range. What does that mean? I did delete the EGR.

need to log 011 as well. what i would log is 011-003 or 011-001-003 to include fueling. but 011-003 should be enough as fuel can be deduced from the boost if you know the maps. you really need to see what the boost is doing. i don't know my maf numbers all that well, but if it's not making boost, the maf isn't going to go up. it will a certain amount as rpm's climb of course.

did you check the MAF connector terminals for any corrosion? maybe some glitchy wiring?

Thanks, burpod. Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know how to log 011-003 vs 011-001-003. For my MAF logs, I went into measuring blocks for group 3 and started logging. How do I differentiate between logging 011-003 and 011-001-003? I'm assuming I go into measuring blocks, group 11 for starters, right?

you don't want to get dielectric grease on the contacts, it makes things worse (it's not conductive), especially over time, IMO. its more for sealing out moisture, but not on the contacts themselves. i made that mistake years ago. the seals on the connector should be sufficient for keeping moisture out. sometimes those are good to put some grease on so they seal up better and not bind. i would clean the grease out of the contacts if you did, with brake cleaner, but could put a little crease on the connector seals.

011-003 - enter 011 for the first block to log, 003 in the 2nd block. nothing in 3rd block
011-001-003 - 011 in first block row, 011 2nd block row, 003 3rd block row... :)

something is very off there. maybe you cut the log short too? it appears to me.. that you were barely pressing the pedal down at all. max requested boost is hardly anything (4.5psi max request), fuel delivered at 10mg max. possible chance pedal sensor is bad?

you might need to take a different log. 011-015-004. but get more than just 1 minute. log the whole little test drive you do. start the car. start the log, then drive. stop it when you get back.

011 - boost
015 - driver request IQ, actual IQ
004 - timing

ok, that makes sense. i was rather confused how you revved that high with so little fuel lol

if you have an errand to do, just log the trip there, and log the trip back. if you do that. log 011-001-003 on the way there. 011-015-004 way back

the stock measuring blocks kinda suck if you're trying to pinpoint a weird issue sometimes... too much redundant information when you could have much more.
