Alarm Retrofit?

I just found out that '12 Passats (and Jettas) do not have a factory alarm! Explains why I couldn't set it off when I tried. There is a retrofit kit, 561-054-620-B, which I'm considering but frankly I'm amazed this isn't part of the body control module.

I'm waiting on a set of install instructions for the alarm kit. I'm also wondering how the new Golf's alarm works... if it just runs through the BCM I wonder if it's just a matter of fitting the horn and flipping some bits. I know there are settings in the BCM for what type of alarm horn the car has.

Yes. There is no perimeter alarm on the '12 Passat.

I've done some more research, the alarm "Kit" is just a hood switch, a meeper horn, and a short wiring harness. The SEL cars I have seen already have the hood switch. I'll look in the parts catalog tonight and see if the alarm horn and short extension harness are expensive.

I looked at the complete factory upgraded alarm kit and cost and thought it was a joke personally because it did not offer any true advancement in protection.

IMO beyond what is on the car now the important upgrades are a glass break sensor, interior motion or sound sensor, and tilt sensor.

As soon as I can get the car to my preffered alarm reseller I am getting them to do the full two way alarm/remote start I have had on every vehicle since 2000. That way its not up to a stranger to respond to my car alarm I will know about it as long as I am within a 1/2 mile and when I show up I have castle doctrine my side if someone is inside my car. ;)

Alarm, LOL! I rarely ever even lock my cars... heck, the key is usually in them, too! :D

It still has immo, so it is not like it would be easily stolen. I guess this is for content security?

Don't leave content in the car, it's an open invitation to theft. Or park in a locked garage at your residence at your home, assuming you live in a big city in a single detached dwelling unit.

I hate car alarms. They are notoriously unreliable, don't provide any additional protection because most people ignore them, and generally just piss your neighbors off when your VW door switches fail in the middle of the night. Waste of money.

I was playing around in VCDS tonight and found this interesting bit:

Byte 6 bit 5. "Anti Theft-System installed / Active". Checking that bit seemed to turn on the alarm system we're all used to: opening a door from the inside while the alarm is armed starts the horn flashing and the blinkers blinking. It used the main horns, so it's nice and loud.

Because of this I won't be retrofitting the meeper alarm horn

If you're worried about theft, get a Lojack, but it's kind of expensive..

You have a PRT SC from the Saudi 120 KPH Speed Alarm you found on VCDS?

Changing one bit in VCDS is expensive?
You assume they open the door to steal your car and the alarm will sound off, which every neighbor will ignore. Around here, your car can get thrown on a flatbed tow truck, and it's gone.

Flatbed tow trucks are so common around here, because many people park illegally in high density housing areas.

No matter how your car is taken, once activated, Lojack locates it, but Lojack is expensive.

Expensive? Maybe compared to some Walmart Viper alarm or something that is no better than the stock system. But you can get Lojack for around $700 installed. IIRC that is a one time fee, no monthly fees at all. Heck the alarm I get costs twice that, though it comes with auto start.

compu_85: Could you please clarify? I've been following this thread here and over at VWVortex.
1) The 2012 Passat TDI does NOT come with an alarm activated.
2) An alarm kit is available from VWoA fo ~$75-$200.
3) The alarm kit is not necessary because, using VCDS, the "built-in" (NOT the alarm kit) can be activated.

Why should anyone purchase and install the alarm kit? (I don't know if my early-production model SEL has a hood switch...I can't check it right now...)

Yes, from the factory the alarm is not activated. It is not listed on the window sticker.
2) An alarm kit is available from VWoA fo ~$75-$200.
Seems the range is $120 to $200+ now.
3) The alarm kit is not necessary because, using VCDS, the "built-in" (NOT the alarm kit) can be activated.
Yes. I have added no extra hardware to my car and have a working perimeter alarm, less the hood switch.
4) Why should anyone purchase and install the alarm kit?
It adds the extra "meeper" alarm horn (The most expensive part of the kit @$100) and the hood switch. (Which your car already has, I remember the wiring being there and wondering why it was different than my car.)

The hood switch goes into this plug I'm pointing at that has no wires on my car:

If your car has wires there you have a hood switch. You can also tell if the MFA's car picture shows the hood open when it's popped.

Weird, I just tried doing that and the alarm never sounded with the same two bits checked. Did you need to wait for the alarm to arm or was it pretty much instant, lock door with remote, pull handle, alarm sounds?

I believe there is a 15 second delay for the alarm to arm... the red LED on the door should blink rapidly and then slow down, indicating that the system is armed.

For some reason, playing with soft coding reminded me of a little skit making fun of Mac computers... "Oh great, I've renamed it NOTHING...!" :D

Got a hood switch for $40 at my local dealer yesterday:

I installed it yesterday, it was quite easy. Here's a simple guide:

-Remove the torx screws holding the grill down at the top
-From the bottom of the grill pull straight forward to unclip it
-Remove the grille
-Remove the two torx screws holding the hood latch in place and slide it out:

You can see the spot where the switch goes on the passenger side of the latch.

The switch just clips in:

-Route the wire along the hood pull cable. I found I had to remove the cold air intake pipes to do this. Couple more torx screws. Plug it in. You should now have a hood open picture in the MFA.

-Screw the hood latch back in place. Shut the hood. Because the grille is still removed you can loosen the screws and adjust the latch to get the hood lined up properly

-Re-open the hood, replace the grille and its screws, close the hood. All done!

Does anyone one know if the 2013 Passat SE w/sunroof (NMS) Supports the Euro Siren alarm ?

P/N 1K0 951 605C

I tried connecting this 3 pin alarm on my car.

connected the +12, Ground and LIN Connector to B36 on the CECM.

As far as i see, the VCDS identifies the alarm, in 09 - Central Electronics block as -
Part No: 1K0 951 605 C
Component: LIN BACKUP HO H03 1301
Coding: 000000

However on activating the Bits, the Alarm doesnt seem to work. The stock Horn (regular horn) is only working.

Not sure if this can be activated or the BCM just doesnt supports it.

Any clue on this ?

Did a bunch of VCDS changes this week with the new Ross-Tech. One of them was the activation of the alarm system, so when I went in for my 30k service today I picked up the hood latch switch to include the hood opening in the alarm.

50.00 and 30 minutes to install and bam...it now shows on the MFD and was just plug and play. Why VW only has it stock on the SEL and not all of them is crazy. The real rip off is when they try to sell you the alarm package for 125+ install...lol

Anyways it's cheap and crazy easy to install (as shown above) if you have a SE or S model.

Thanks for finding this Compu_85 :D

You probably need to uncheck the bit for the "Basic alarm (USA)"

Alarm systems on closeout

FYI,

The "alarm system" retrofit kit for the NMS, 561-054-620-B is on closeout for $50. As of this posting VW says they have $130 of them left.

The kit includes the alarm horn (meep meep!), short adapter harness, bracket, attachment bolt, hood latch switch (SEL cars already have this), and some instructions.

Activation is done through VCDS in the body control module. Enable Byte 6 Bit 5, and disable Byte 6 Bit 3.
