Sorry to be away from the forum for so long...been real busy! Jetta has been at Stokley's Service Center for several weeks. The only thing he can find wrong are some issues with the EGR valve. There are no codes, but when the EGR is disconected the smoking/hesitation problem stops. Perry Stokley says it is either the electronic or mechanical component of the EGR...he doesn't know which. New part on order from the Stealer. I'll update when work is completed.

Flyboy, I would be interested to hear about your experiences with Stokley's. I will be needing a CV joint replaced soon, and am triing to keep my options open.

I had my first timing belt done at Port City Foreign Auto on Halls Mill. I was pretty happy with them, and will likely stick with them for the CV job, unless there are glowing recomendations elsewhere.

Thanks

...Not burned down yet...but was starting to think about it! :)

OK, this is my follow-up to the strange smoking/bogging problem I was having with my 06 Jetta. I took it in to Stokley’s Service Center in Mobile, AL. Talked with Perry Stokley (owner). After several weeks of testing, checking, Vagcoming, etc…There was nothing definite that the testing pointed to. No codes, etc. Perry determined, through his experience…and some of his “backyard” testing… that it was probably the EGR valve. He said the EGR valve was a combination of electrical (electronic) and mechanical parts and he felt it was the cause of my problems. We talked about it and he was worried about me spending the money on parts and labor without any guarantee the problem would be solved. I have to admit…I appreciated his honesty. I told him to go for it. He ordered the part from VW. Parts, labor, tax, etc…came to $485.00 ($200 was labor). Perry also said he thought the strange grinding noise I was hearing was also related (I have yet to figure this one out!).

We just returned from a 2,300 mile trip to go skiing and the car performed without fault. No more smoking, choking, bogging down, etc. Also, the grinding, clunking sounds it had started making (sounded like a wheel bearing to me…) are now gone. I guess Perry was right! In any case…all is good! Average MPG was 42.5 on the trip. I am very satisfied with the results.:D

I feel confident that I will be using Perry Stokley in the future for my TDI needs. Keep in mind, however, that he is pretty much a one man operation and don’t drop off your vehicle expecting to pick it up the next day…or next week…because it “ain’t gonna happen!” Beyond that…I feel comfortable in recommending him for TDI service work.

I will also post a portion of this on the A5 forum.

Travis :)

Wow, i've been away from this thread a while and there seems to be a lot of interest in a North Alabama GTG, I would gladly attend and would love to swap information on all things TDI, I would also like to share/exchange info on biodiesel if any of you are making your own as I am. If you're looking for a good mechanic, I know one but he doesn't take just anyone, he does timing belt and most other things engine related, no suspension, tires, transmission, he can turn brake rotors. anyway I would love to see it happen!

Hey Alabama folks! My parents live in Huntsville and I plan to move back in early '08 as the real estate market in La is very very slow. I used to live in Birmingham and I can steer you to a good vw only indie shop there if anyone needs a recommendation. I'd like to see someone throw a GTG here in North Alabama in the spring or early summer. I see TDIs rolling all around town, keep an eye out for my tomato(tornado in VW speak) red Jetta.
Greetings, We have the VW/Audi club in Huntsville with chapters throughout the state as well www.h2otuning.com

I am one of a few TDI's in the club and would like to GTG with other TDI's if someone gets that going. We have a big event with a lot of sponsors coming up in May 16-18 in Helen, GA SOWO 2nd anual event (huge but not just TDI's)

I lived in Alabaster for 8 years until we moved to the Bluff Park part of Hoover 4 years ago. Also, used to go through Maylene a lot in the late 80's when I was commuting to school at Montevallo from Bessemer.

I think you have the ideal commute where a TDI can help you out a lot. My drive is about 10 miles from Hoover to the southside of Birmingham, so I do a lot of stop-n-go driving.

EDIT: "Roll Tide!"

Ohhhh no! Not need anymore speeding tickets than she's already gotten. Besides, I wanna keep this car. The last 2 cars we had took out deers and totaled the cars. Don't want this one to end up the same way. If it wasn't for not being able to go back up with the max speed, I'd lower it down.

New to TDIs and I've apparently bought one of the unloved 2001 automatics. Wish I had found this site sooner! I've just bought mine (Monday) and it's already in the shop. Might be telling them to cancel the sale and I'll just keep looking...haven't decided yet. They're replacing the tranny. I'm scared they're not going to do it right and that the car hasn't been maintained properly at this point. Plan to take it to Hutchinson when I get it back and let him inspect it. REALLY hoping it's not a lemon. :( Love the car, but just don't want the headaches.

If I keep it, I'll swap massages for VeeDub help! <laugh> Anyway...if I keep it - I travel 280... Silver Beetle or Red Dodge 2500 Megacab (horse trailers require big trucks with drinking problems). Would like to meet some of you folks!

Oh well...

Sorry to have upset you folks with the Vols comment. Anyway, tranny has been replaced in the Beetle and it still has no power. They've checked everything they know to check and was going to send it to local VW dealership for them to check it, but I guess CarMax has decided they've spent too much on it already and they're giving me my down payment and transfer fee back. Therefore...I'm on the hunt again if any of you know of anyone wanting to sell their TDI!!! (One that's NOT quite as unloved as this one apparently was).

I'm here in Floribama (Pcola) for at least another 3-4 months for my school. I have a black 2 door ALH Golf with a red "DI" badge on the back. If it's fast, and black, it's probably mine :)

In the garage with fuel system problems right now. Been working on it for a month with no end in sight. Oh well.

any GTGs planned for the end of summer? Hopefully I'll be up and running again by then.

The battery light on the instrument cluster in my '03 Jetta TDI starting blinking on the way to work Monday morning! From reading the forums I'm inclined to believe that it is probably the alternator pulley gone bad (I just turned over 90,000 miles). I think I could replace the pulley myself but decided to have Perry Stokley at Stokely's Service Center look at it. Perry couldn't squeeze me in until next Tuesday, so I'll drive my truck to work in the meantime. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

This will by my first visit to Perry's shop but from what I've read here, he is a good TDI mechanic. Hopefully, this will only be a pulley replacement and not the alternator.
