I have a failed air bag control module in my 2000 Jetta TDI that is 6Q0-909-605-A. Can part # 6Q0-909-605-F be used as a replacment as well or do I have to have the same part # 6Q0-909-605-A that it came with?

;)

Long story short, yes-I think so. The 605-A was superceded by the 605-F some time ago.

The 605-A had a glitch/bug in the firmware in it that cause it to fail when scanned. (personal experience)

Supposedly, the 605-F is the replacement for it. I've even heard, though not seen, that there are some controllers out there that have the "A" scratched out and and an "F" stamped over it-as if they had been reworked.

Be aware, however, that the controller has an internal code as to which airbags are actually in the car and which ones are not. I saw a procedure in the bentley manual for altering this code wth the factory version of the Vag-Com. So you have to make sure that that is correct or some of your bags may or may not deploy.

How do you know that you controller is failed? Do you have codes from a vag-Com or from a dealership?

There are companies out there that claim to be able to reset most of those codes. (For instance, if the car was in accident.) I have no peresonal experience with them but others here have reccomend it. (I just drive around with the airbag light on lol)

Thanks for the great replies guys. My car was scanned by Vag Com 3 times and each time the same error comes up along with the idiot light remains on for airbags. I am 100% convinced that the controller has failed.
Here is what vag com reports:

Address 15: Airbags
Part No: 6Q0 909 605 A
Component: 09 AIRBAG VW5 0004
Coding: 12345
Shop #: WSC 00066
1 Fault Found:
65535 - Internal Control Module Memory Error
00-00 - -

I am looking for a replacement module or having mine reflashed if that will fix it? I have seen a post where a module was found at a salvage yard for $25.00 (pretty sweet) at that price. I am looking to fix the problem "Most Ricky Tic" as I am driving around with no air bag protection and inspection is here.

Ooooh, the infamous and insidious 65535 code. Welcome to the club. This s the code that is given when the firmware bugs causes a dead controller. Uwe et al, the guys from Vag-Com, have told me that the Siemens people and VW insist that that code can not be cleared or reflashed. Indeed, I was inable to clear it with vag-com. However, I'm told by other sthat it can. perhaps afarfalla can elaborate on this if he has any direct exeperince with clearing/reflashing for that specific code.

I am going to send my control module to www.airbagsystems.com Chris there says he can take care of my problem for $100 "maximum". That sounds pretty reasonable to me along with a guarentee.
Does anyone know what type/size screwdriver is required to remove the control module? I want to have the correct tools on hand as it is about 20 degrees in my drivway on a good day here in NH!

It's been a year since I looked at it, but I think it's hex bolts holding it down. So you'll probably need a 1/4 drive shalow socket set with a short extension and possibley universal swivel sockets.

To be even less helpful: it's either hex sockets or phillips, unless it's torx or perhaps metric internal hex (allen) screws.

It's a bit of a pain to get at, but just four 10mm bolts, IIRC. I'd go the salvage yard route over the $100 as long as it is from a vehicle (2002 or newer should have scannable module) where they are not deployed.

That's true, however, if he pulls one froma later model car or, even worse, from say a bettle or Golf, he'l have to recode it for all of the airbags that he is in his car, as opposed to the donor car.

Which, if he has vag-com shouldn't be an issue; hr printed that his coding was 12345 (that sound too easy to be true lol).

Hey if you do this, report back to us. I would really like to hear if it actually works or not.

Ok Folks I got my air bag module back from www.airbagsystems.com and total price was $108.00 including shipping. I put the module in and followed their instructions and after 7 seconds the CEL went off for good.
They sent me an e-mail with a tracking # as well. I would reccomend them to anyone with an air bag module problem.

No Ididn't rescan them. I had the warm and fuzzy feeling after that orange orb went out finally!
Funny that yo should post. I couldn't find this thread. My controller is at Airbag Systems as we speak.

I've got another thread open somewher conce3rning the removal reinstallation procedure. The Bentley Manual states to disconnect battery, connect controller, turn ignition switch on THEN connect battery. Sounds weird to me. What order did you do yours in?

Bilzer-Does it still work?

I've just found out that I've got the dreaded 65535 fault code and I've been told that it's hopeless. I'm a cross over member from Audi. I've got a TT, but I believe that it's the same unit-8n8909601 (8n8959643 old).

I've got most of my interior apart and still can't find the booger!

Any help appreciated, Thanks:confused:

Send it to Airbag Systems, referenced in pos 2 of this thread. $108 shipped. They rock.
