I broke the center of the three bolts that hold the mount on the transmission. first I tried to weld a nut onto the bolt that was left protruding no luck. I went ahead and drilled the bolt out to try an extractor no luck. I finally drilled the bolt out any ideal on how to get the treads of the bolt out? or would it be OK to drill the treads out and install a grade 8.8 nut on the back side?

if you can put a nut on the other side that would be an acceptable repair, i would use a locking nit if you can,or at least locktight. If you decide to helicoil it then you will be drilling the threads out anyway to properly size the hole for the helicoil tap

If you do heli coil, it being a transmission case, just be sure you have enough metal to hold the new threads for the threaded insert. You do not want to drill into the transmission case or weaken it.

I've seen this happen but it was on the old tranny that was going to the junk yard.
So, I have wondered how I would attempt to repair if I ever had to. I think the nut on the back side would be the easiest method and it would hold. I suggest that you use a flat washer too!

I wonder what VW engineers were thinking when they spec'ed a bolt to go thru the hole by at least an inch?.......doesn't make sense!

When my mount stripped, I tried an insert-failed in a few months-so I made a new bracket/dogbone. It took a few designs but I came up with a system that is very robust. I made a few extra units and sell them on ebay. It takes less than an hour to install and then your are done. It will save you a lot of time and money.

A dog bone is less than $30 in the aftermarket. How is that saving any significant amount of money?

I'm interested. Mine is stripped on the transmission side and when I search for mounts, I only find the part where it's mounted to the frame. What keyword should I use?

VW Jetta Golf MK4 manual transmission saver dogbone replacement linkage. Sorry I missed the question, thought I had it setup to notify me. I made some aluminum blocks, so you won't have to do any drilling-just use your old bushing setup-new bushings included! You can view it on ebay-but order here via paypal and it will save you $30.00-thanks. Ebay item number 203089609230
