Just got the car on friday, loving it so far. Though the car has just the basic stereo because I didn't feel like forking out $1300 for a glorified cd/ipod player. I got a pioneer AVIC-Z120BT (3D nav, bluetooth (phone and bluetooth music), ipod hook-up, HD radio, backup camera, aux input, cd, dvd, and SD) for $1400. A much better deal that I am quite pleased with. Though the store I bought it from did not have a dash kit for the MK6 jetta. Does anybody know if the MK5 dash kit will work? Or know where I could get the kit for the MK6? Im itching to get this unit up and running!

just FYI. I had my Premium 8 radio out today and there is no wiring diagram on the back/bottom/side of the radio itself for the harness. The main wiring (power and speakers) is the same from previous years but the little plugs for the SAT radio and the Bluetooth module are not. Also the antenna is split in to 3 parts. Im guessing 2 for AM/FM radio and then another for the sat radio. I did not disconnect them as I was just tapping into the speaker wires for a line converter. Also I did not find any Switched power back there. Just a constant on power. Apparently the radio gets a wake command from the convenience module when the key is turned on.

Good Luck to you.

I have a Pioneer AVIC F700BT (from my old car traded in for the TDI) which I intend to install in my TDI.
I measured the size of the frame on the 2010 Golf Wagon and it seems to be the same opening as the 2011 Jetta.
Best Buy says they can install it but I haven't done it yet as I was waiting for the SAT trial to expire which just did 2 days ago.

I will try and get it installed soon when I have the time.
I also have a rear view camera which is mounted on the centre of the rear license plate frame.

It costs $100 to install the AVIC and $50 for the rear view camera.

Figured it out :)

1. Save your settings (Setup menu... I know where it's at but I don't know the name.. It's like second from the bottom, says Setup Memory or something)
2. Go to standby (easier to unmount any USB device)
3. Hold down SRC and eject and press the reset button with a pin - don't let go until the buttons all flash.
4. You're in "Opening Screen" mode. Replace like you would the background (you need to plug your USB drive back in probably)
5. Press/hold SRC to turn it off and back on.

Replacing the background is in Setup somewhere - you attach a USB drive and pick the background. I want to steal the RNS510 bootup logo for mine, but I can't find it.

Follow up here,
Got the deck put in today at visions electronics. They did a good job, it turns out the MK5 jetta dash kit did work (double DIN) and everything went well. They did need to use the CAN-BUS module which was a nice 200$ addition to the job but all and all it only costed me 200$ more than the stock multimedia package except for that I got nav, DVD, sd, bluetooth, sat radio, on top of the stock CD changer and ipod hookup. I recommend anybody getting the mulimedia package to consider aftermarket due to better functionality and bang for your buck.

I didn't even think of aftermarket when I bought mine, would have been a good idea though. One nice thing about the multimedia option however is the steering controls which i'm guessing you don't have. I would consider upgrading mine if I could get a good deal, what was the $200 part you mentioned for?

Congrats JL.

Do you mind letting me know the part # for the CanBus Module?
I am planning to get Best Buy to install my Pioneer AVIC F700BT in my TDI.
I've just received the new Maps + Firmware update SD from Pioneer and am eager to get it done.

I assume the CanBus module integrates into the steering whell controls for the phone + volume.

While I will agree with you about the factory unit, I don't think I can agree with you on "best bang for your buck". On top of the sub par factory navigation, (in the US Market) we get front fog lamps, KESSY, and the chrome package. So even people like me that would normally go the route of aftermarket bought the Nav. package so that I could get the perks other than the factory Nav.

i think he is in Canada and in Canada they charge something like 1300 for the radio upgrade. it includes:
- Premium 8 radio - touch screen with 6-disc CD changer
- MDI - Media Device Interface with iPod® connectivity
- Bluetooth® Mobile Phone Connectivity
- Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer and indicator
- SIRIUS® Satellite Radio integrated

So he just doesnt get the multifunction steering wheel and trip computer.

That's exactly it, this is why I took the upgrade, not really for the radio but everything else mentioned. I also wanted the NAV but that requires an extra whopping $850 plus you need to buy the highline. I figure now it would be worth selling of the factory unit and getting a better unit that does everything (NAV, dvd etc...).

Did you know that the fog lights that come in that package with the NAV are $700 from the dealer alone. Also to put that radio in you are going to need a special wiring harness that is about $130. Its like a vwh7 or something like that. The car runs what's called can bus for data, and without this harness. You run the risk of setting off the check engine light. Just FYI. http://www.scosche.com/car-audio/product/1857 I think is the part.

Canadian version of the TDI comes factory with the cold weather package (block heater, fogs, heated seats). So $850 was really only for the NAV

Hey, just clarifying here.

I got the canadian version comfortline. I got it with no options at all, though in canada that does come stock (tdi package) with the chrome trim (inside and out) fogs, inline circ heater (not a block heater), heated seats mirrors and spray nozzles. To get nav you'd have to upgrade to the highline. And for the comfortline the premium radio is $1300 and all that adds to the package is ipod MDI/6 disc changer, touchscreen, steering wheel controls, sirius, and bluetooth. On top of what the premium radio comes with stock, my deck has SD memory slot, bluetooth music, HD radio, sirius radio, Divx playback, DVD playback, hands free voice recognition (nav, music, and phone), 3D navigation display, AVIC feed (find desired location on my iphone and it shows up on the nav), back up camera ready, and dolby digital playback. Love it.

I don't know the part number for the CAN-BUS module, they phoned me mid-install and said they needed to use it and they had it in stock so I just said sure. The way they explained it to me was without the module it was like having a chain of christmas lights with a missing bulb, it all is tied together and its required for functionality of the speakers themselves. They said it was built in to the stock radio and that's why it was needed as an addition to the install because it comes out with the stock radio. The wiring harness I got at visions and was only 60-some dollars.

No check engine light though, (thank god) it all works seamlessly. Some aftermarket head units say they need an accesory position on the key slot to be installed. I was a bit worried when I went in for install but apparently as soon as you put the key in (I do not have kessy, just the plain old key) it's in accesory mode so no worries there.

I also got my subs put in (2-10" JL audio subs, 300RMS watt JL audio amp) and they sound awesome! no rattles or shaking at all, I was very suprised as they are loouudd. I had to put sound mat in my beemer and it still didn't sound as good as it does in this car.

The only thing I would maybe like is the steering wheel controls, but I'm not that lazy, I can deal with lifting my arm to change the song/volume;).

So when you go after market you lose steering wheels controls? There is no speacial wiring harness you can purchase to fix that?

I had the Pioneer AVIC F700BT installed on my last vehicle and it was able to use the controls on the steering.

When I get it installed in my new TDI I will let you know.

I couldn't give you a definite answers because of the wide range of aftermarket head units. A lot more head units are supporting steering wheel control as they are coming to be quite standard in new cars, but I'd read up on your specific model before you get it to ensure it in fact supported. I'm pretty sure mine does support it, but it's just the plain ol leather wrapped steering wheel.

I am ordering mine from Crutchfield because they also have an install kit for my car's dash plus detailed instructions for any car, and the stereo that you buy.

As much as I love aftermarket stereos, I'm probably going to leave my factory unit alone. I would love to have a small sub mounted in the rear deck though. A single 8" would probably be fine. Might have to try to rig something up.

I put a single 10" Alpine Sub and 500 watt mono amp in the trunk and all I can say is WOW....you've gotta do it! Search the pics section for subwoofer...mines there.

I took my factory radio out to tap into the speaker wires for a high level input. In the process I had to unhook the small indicator that tells you if the passenger airbag is on. If that is unplugged when you turn the key on then it will throw a code that has to be cleared. I cleared mine with my VAG-COM.

Bringing this thread back to life!!!

So after some research I can tell that our radios (I have RCD 510 without option of rear view camera) have been dieing left right and center.
I checked my fuses and nothing, dead!
What aftermarket radios you guys have?

Was looking for a radio that has Bluetooth,CD, USB and maybe NAV.
Whats out there that is plug and play or almost plug andplay

Thanks
