Received registration renewal notice..... to renew need proof from VW recall #23N5 fixed , need send to dmv, or no registration....
My question is this recall or ecu update any affects on fuel mileage? Any stories so far? Can some one tell any difference on performance or fuel mileage before and after?

I didn't notice any difference in mileage or performance.
Dealer fills the DEF as part of a service, so I'm not sure if it uses any more, but the 23N5 isn't the fix that will make the car comply with the emissions fiasco.
The final compliance fix that will likely hinder performance and mileage isn't out yet.
I think the 23N5 attempt was about a year ago before the SHTF, and you're getting that notice because it's an open emissions recall.

Get the 23N5 now before the "Big" fix comes in and tanks your MPG.

I agree with n1acguy: didn't notice any hit to mileage. Only noticeable change was that it eliminated the 3rd gear "stumble" when just heading out in the morning that many had complained about.

no change in MPG or adblue use, like other said just fixes the stress on the turbo in the AM. I can still hit 55mpg during summer months with ease. Remember there is a big fix for the big fix. Malone+Rawtek

The fix for the emissions scandal for the cars with the SCR/UREA system should not be that big of a deal. We have the same SCR system on heater stacks at the oil refinery, just a bigger system. And not too long ago the EPA had us lower the NOX that can be released so all we did was lower the NOX that the system measures down stream of the catalyst, and it assed more ammonia (UREA) which lowers the NOX at the stack. So it should be as easy as they have said as adding more UREA to drive down the NOX at the tail pipe. It shouldn't affect mileage or performance. This is how all the other clean diesel vehicles are set up. My 2011 Ford 6.7 uses UREA, the Chevy's do, Mercedes do and all are able to meet the emissions standards so VW should be able to also with the SCR system. The Jetta's and other VW's without the SCR system, that is a different story.

We had that recall done. I keep scrupulous mileage records, and there was NO change in our mileage before/after. I have not yet had to add DEF to the car, it's been done on the provided maintenance schedule. That is now about to change since the 40K is coming up. Since I plan on doing these things myself, we shall see, but AFAIK there is no detectable change in the car from doing this recall. My understanding was, in any event, that it merely changed how the car warmed up so as to place less stress on the turbo.

They described it as a new warm-up strategy, but I believe that they made numerous changes that are unknown at this point. The very timing indicates that it was an attempt to improve NOX emissions, in fact it DID improve them, just not enough. If the NOX emissions after warmup have improved, that means something is different after warmup, correct?

It smoothed out the shifts considerably. Before it was very surge-y (I just made up a word) and it would surge with the power. I could spin the tires then spins them again in 2nd.

Now it is very muted power delivery. Not a lack of power just that it delivers it in a more refined way.
