Always just filled the hole with grease then found something close to the hole size and gave it a smack with a hammer. This seems a bit less messy.

I have used grease in the past. Never will go back to that. Grease is extremely messy.

Bread doesn't squirt everywhere as much as grease. Bread doesn't make your hands slippery. Bread cleans right out of the end of the crank with zero residue.

EDIT: I used dry bread and didn't wet it. I found it worked itself to mush as I pounded the tool.

Wonder if silly putty would work? Just couldn't bring myself to waste food like that. (It is a really good idea though.)

I've seen demos where they have a vat of starch and can run across it.
But if they stop they sink in.
It probably works a little like that.
You couldn't run through grease, it doesn't stiffen up the same as starch when impacted.

There are just too many to list....
Play-Doh. That's what I've used if I had it available. Grease is usually the standard since we always have some on hand.

But I also have an actual bearing puller tool, so...

White bread is a good tool to have when soldering on existing copper plumbing. If there is a small drip or drainage it will swell up and stop it long enough to solder the joints being added. Then it flushes out when the water is turned back on.
Never thought of using it on a pilot bushing, much cleaner than grease, slick trick. I like the playdoh idea too.

Any idea why the brass hammer is specified? Couldn't one just use a normal framing hammer?

It is funny everyone talking about not making a mess, or less of a mess... in a shop, that is of little concern. Replace the oil cooler and associated nonsense in the bowels of the valley on a V6 TDI after it has been slowly leaking coolant and oil for the last 50k miles. Now THAT'S a mess, LOL.

These V6 TDIs are an albatross of fragile tubes, hoses, plastic pieces, wiring, connectors, more tubes, and utter design overcomplexity and stupidity of the exponential type. I thought the gasser V6s were bad... oh, no.... :D

Every time you think you've gotten to the part you want to replace:

6 liter Internatinal leaking injector lines beneath the intake manifold on the "Critter Getter" rear loading garbage truck, hmm hmmm gooood. Hydraulic leaks above the brooms of a sweeper, welding inside the tank of a vactor (turd herder), packer cylinders on a side loader.............I could make a real tasty list. A different kind of messy, But retirement has cleaned my boots and I don't have to chase rats out of my play area any longer or wonder what just dripped down my neck. Did it all for fun.
