That's great advice, thank you! I will try to do that.

There were a few issues with the car I looked at last night. First off, I noticed some pieces were missing/not installed properly,

like the visor mirror cover and the trim inside at the top of the hatch. They said they removed some pieces from this car to put into another car that was being sold, and the parts are on back-order or something so they haven't put them back yet.

Another issue was a weird line around the inside roof of the car. It has a sunroof and it looks like water damage,

but I could be wrong. They're going to have their technician look at it today and get back to me. I have pictures but I don't know how to make them into a hyperlink. It's a line of stain going around the top of the car. No weird smells though.

.
Shoot

Striped, poor storage on this unit

Sounds like they were stealing parts on this car to repair other messed up units.

Yes, it does! I'm not going to get it. Maybe I'll find another one close enough to check out. Otherwise I'll just wait until Sept/Oct 2018 to decide what to get next.

Somehow I just leased a third Jetta yesterday.

Complete opposite experience as the CA and SC dealerships (has to travel quite a ways to get two 6M's). Sales mgr gave 1250 off msrp plus the 8500. Zero hard sell tactics or gimmicks, and best of all he agreed to not mark up the tier1 jetta s rate factor .00038. Getting the real 'buy' rate saves $40 per month on the entire lease or purchase. In and out the door in an hour! I counted 13 TDIs on their lot a month ago, now they have two left -- both passat dsg. Call Chris @ VW of Strongsville of Ohio if interested.

Congrats!
Thanks. Watching the total # of VW New Diesels decrease every few days on cars.com is helping to reassure that this was a good decision. A few family members hope we stop at 3 rather than collecting the whole 'set' -- one of each color.

I pulled the trigger and ended up with a 2015 Golf Sportwagen S in night blue metallic around the end of May. Got it for 22,500 OTD. Also did the 0% for 72 month financing! Most dealers that I called in the Dallas area were not willing to go below 23,500 so I guess I got lucky.

Supply and demand -- will balance out in the long run

Great for re-sale value(s)

VW TDIs were always high on that issue.

I went to a tallahassee dealer a few weeks back to look at some nos sel sportwagons. They would not deal at all. Had the gall to tell me that there were no fixed used units on the market. Showed them how the internet works and walked out. On my way as i type this to north atlanta on a bus to pick up my 15 gsw tdi cpo with 27k, for 10k under the best price i could find on a nos sel. Has anyone looked at the depreciation on a nos tdi, its horrid.

I just checked NADA out of curiosity. I purchased my NOS GSW S TDI DSG two months ago for $18.8K. NADA has it at "clean retail" of $17.9K with the 5K miles I've already driven.

That's not horrid, IMHO, and I'd say real resale (i.e. the actual market) will hold up better with diesel, especially as these cars become more of a unicorn over the years.

I bought my 2015 Beetle with 244 miles on it, (nos) for $22k. NADA listed below:

Invoice MSRP
Base Price $25,372 $26,430
Destination $820 $820
Total Base Price $26,192 $27,250
Options (change)
Price with Options $26,192 $27,250

I think it was a pretty good deal myself.

If that's a new Passat SEL that's probably MSRP. If the rebates are still available that's the same deal everyone buying leftover TDIs was getting. The rebates look a lot more attractive on a $25K car than a $35K car.

They are

My good luck -- I need-want-satisfied with the base (S)

The base (S) GOLF is also holding a better percentage on NADA resale value(s)

Guessing the resale value has more to do with the TDI than the SE-SEL up grade issues.

guys don't get me wrong I'm just talking about the asking price on the NOS and the depreciation that Edmonds lists and their site in the first three years. I picked up my certified pre-owned GSW TDI SEL with 27k miles yesterday in Atlanta and skipped out the door at 4000 under value. And it still has almost three years of warranty left

Tell me how you got Edmonds to show 3 years depreciation so I can check. Mine shows to be worth right about what I paid for it. I expect it to hold its value pretty well and may even surprise me as fewer and fewer Beetles have been being built and very few 2015's with the newer CVCA engine. I have considered just storing it till my 2003 Beetle TDI gives up the ghost long from now.

I will try and post it tonight. Anyone who cares to know i got 44mpg average on the trip to the keys from atlanta and back to jax. Power is noticibly nerfed compared to the 2010 jsw, even though its lighter. i will be doing the egr and dpf delete and malone tune a soon as the cpo warranty runs out. But overall the new car is much nicer than the 2010 se.

Something wrong with that. $12k depreciation the first year? No way. Edmonds showed this on mine for the 2015 Beetle depreciation.

5 Year Details

Year 1Year 2Year 3Year 4Year 55 Yr Total
Depreciation $3,783 $2,079 $1,830 $1,622 $1,455 $10,769
Taxes & Fees$1,396$61$61$61$61$1,640

Maintenance$855$301$1,613$1,341$814$4,924
Repairs$158$378$551$639$742$2,468
True Cost to Own ®$9,245$5,792$6,943$6,461$5,773$34,214

Send me the link to that NADA calculator as I can't seem to find it.

Not all that interested in the cost to own as the depreciation numbers. Depreciation doesn't look abnormal in the Edmonds example.

For your Golf:

5 Year Details

Year 1Year 2Year 3Year 4Year 55 Yr Total
Depreciation$4,393$1,944$1,710$1,516$1,360$10,923

Financing$844$673$493$305$110$2,425

Insurance$1,214$1,250$1,288$1,327$1,366$6,445
Maintenance$782$267$1,690$1,285$719$4,743
Repairs$158$378$551$639$742$2,468
True Cost to Own ®$9,926$5,552$6,802$6,172$5,428$33,880

Doesn't look out of line for depreciation either.

Is $12k out of line though?

NADA isn't factoring in the $5k incentive ("Cash incentives are not currently available for this model"), so if you look at standard 20% depreciation off the $33k sticker price, that's $6600, add in the $5k because nobody is paying sticker, and you're up to $11600, and then throw in the missing $600 "just because" (after owning it one year it's three model years old).

I think NADA's doing their best at spitballin' because this TDI scenario is uncharted waters for predicting value.

Edit: another way to say it is retail = $33,495 - $5,000 = $28,495.
Average 20% 1 year depreciation reduces it to $22,796.
$33,495 (sticker) - $22,796 = $10,700.
Toss in the additional $1,500 reduction for the 3 model year thing.

I think you are spot on regarding how the scandal has had an effect on the depreciation on these cars. The scarcity factor could balance this out over time depending on how many of the 15's make it back into circulation and if VW stays out of the US diesel market. I would just suggest to anyone looking for a NOS 2015 TDI to take a hard look at a CPO model with reasonable miles on it. You will pay thousands less and have a practically new car, heck mine has almost a full three years between the factory and CPO warranties. Either way you can't go wrong with the TDI unless you are a fast turnover person and get a new car every few years, in which case that NOS might be trouble when you go to trade up. I bought my last two 2010 tdi's at 75k(now 177k) and 109k(now139k) with no issues, so my 15 with 27k is just getting started. I actually would be more concerned about a NOS that sat for 2 years, not good for machines to just sit. But a new car warranty is some peace of mind.

There will be a depreciation *support* issue if VW does not sell TDIs in the future. (Scarcity)

I'm taking the fix, and counting on good re-sale value, down the road.

On TDICLUB, there has been way too many horror issues with storage car issues.

And dealers who shoved 'em out the door lacking repairs and or replacements on soured parts while rotting in the weather.

Miles, and condition ~~ miles and condition, will dictate the future resale value of these cars.

I paid $18.8K for mine. Can you link me to a used one with under 5,000 miles for that?

I also don't follow your logic about buying used it you turn over cars. They're model year 2015 regardless. New versus used makes no difference on resale. Model year, mileage, and condition are all that would matter there.

This certainly isn't the case in my area. The CPOs are going for what paid for my NOS GWS. Except they all have 40k - 50k km. And less warranty.

2015s

Used?

new?

All the same, condition and mileage is the point.

But there is the issue of *new* '15s -- storage abuse -- or not
