I have a "99 New Beetle. For the last year and a half it has been driving me crazy with the "hard to start when warm syndrome.
I have come to learn about the Hammom Modification.
I want to see if it will be easier to make the mod at the ECU end of the wiring harness.
How do I access the Ecu behind the radio without damageing the dash?
I don't have the Bentley for the NB.

The Rear, center piece on top of the dash pushes back and lifts up. Then you will see screws to remove. Remove the ones on the Left side to access the ECU, and remove the ones on the Right side to access the cabin filter.

this is very easily confusing, what Dog means really is you push the top part of the dash closest to the windshield, it doesn't push back but forward toward the windshield. Go ahead and push it hard it will come off. then as Dog says you can crawl up on top of the dash and see all the screws that need to be taken off. the ecu is under the left side dash cover. take your time and you will see how it comes off and how to unplug it from the harness. Just take your time and you can do it. don't lose the screws and put them all back in. take your time removing the ecu from its clips or you will break the clips. good luck

Use a Wooden Clothes Pin!

I use the two halves of a spring loaded wooden clothes pin. Remove the dash cover by placing the thin ends of the two halves of the clothes pin in the sides of the cover furtherest from the windshield. Do this keeping the pins 90 degrees to the cover. You will have to push very hard toward windshield in order for the cover to un snap from the ball joint connection. ECU is on the drivers side. Good Luck!:D
