Acceleration Lag after 20k Service

I just had 20k service done yesterday, as soon as I left the dealer, I noticed that I had some lag with acceleration in all gears -- and as if the tachometer gauges were lagging behind engine rev. The engine does seem like it gets its power back around 2.5-3k RPM but I definitely lost the low end torque that I was use to, all of a sudden the car just got slower.

I don't see any error codes on dash and I can only get my hands on VAGCOM in a few days.

I spoke with dealer same day and they said they did not reset anything or made any changes to onboard computer blah blah blah.

Any ideas before I cuss these guys out today? Thank you

20k service involves a fuel filter change. Perhaps the mechanic didn't prime the filter/canister. If this is the case, it should resolve itself fairly quickly with more driving. Be warned I'm not a mechanic so these words can be totally leading you in the wrong direction.

^^^Once the engine is started, the FFcanister is full of fuel, so there would/should be no subsequent issues (related to "priming")

However, there's always the possibility that the FF change itself wasn't done properly. Could a FF gasket misalignment cause fuel flow issues? I have no idea, but it's worth asking.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just got done my 45,000 km service and it went extremely well. Some people just have ****ty service departments.

If you trust yours, sleep well.

I'm not too sure what the problem is, I also lost some MPG --- from 33 city to about 24 city --- highway I use to get close to 50 on long distances, right now highest I got was 41mpg that's babying the car every time.

I'm about to go pickup vagcom and run diagnostics. Dealer wants me to come in, but they only want to visually inspect the car vs run diagnostics.

Do you have an itemized list of what service did?

VCDS is required (or should be) for VW owners, pick it up for sure. It pays for itself for diagnostics, plus you can tweak minor items.

Do you hear any air rushing type noises? My guess is some part of the intake system is not clamped / sealed properly and you're losing boost.

Find a long wall (i.e. behind a strip mall or grocery store) that you can drive your car along fairly closely. Roll down the windows and give it some go-pedal. You should be able to hear most sizable boost leaks that way.

VCDS is required (or should be) for VW owners, pick it up for sure. It pays for itself for diagnostics, plus you can tweak minor items.

Hey Mike,

they did a 20k service on the car, nothing more than needed. I do have receipt I can definitely take a look... although if you see my previous post I believe the MAF sensor went bad or they broke it.

Well, there's your likely culprit.

They replaced your air filter, and probably forgot to (or didn't fully) connect your mass air flow sensor. This sensor is located after (towards the engine) the airbox and has an electrical connector that goes to it. It is likely either unplugged or not fully connected.

Check that out.

You may be right I will check it.

Although I remember talking to the service people, they said air filter gets changed every 40k Miles, so I don't know if they disconnected anything but I will definitely check that out in next half hour and I will get back to you! thank you!

Yup, I concur. Right from Ross-Tech's wiki for P0104:

Possible Symptoms
Probably no serious malfunctions
Loss of power
Possible Causes
Wiring and/or connections (short circuit?)
Leaks before or after G70
Mass Air Flow (MAF) (G70) defective
Seldom: Control Module defective
Possible Solutions
Check wiring and connections
Check / Replace Mass Air Flow (MAF) (G70)
Check / Replace Controle Module

I notice that's the code is intermittent, so that would indicate a connected, plugged in, yet failing sensor.

What do you think about ABS Breaks malfunctioning? I feel that the brakes have been awfully sensitive since the service as well, on the harder side.

DO you think it could be the control module?

Personally, I'd just go check and see if the sensor is plugged in. If it is, disconnect and reconnect it. If that fixes it, then motor on.

I wouldn't clear any codes though just in case you have to take it in.

As for the ABS fault, I'd probably try clearing that code and seeing if it comes back. You're not having any symptoms related to TPMS, correct?

Personally, I'd just go check and see if the sensor is plugged in. If it is, disconnect and reconnect it. If that fixes it, then motor on.

I wouldn't clear any codes though just in case you have to take it in.

As for the ABS fault, I'd probably try clearing that code and seeing if it comes back. You're not having any symptoms related to TPMS, correct?

I know that it worked before, I'm not sure if it works now.
