Looking to buy a 3.0 TDI A6. Curious if there’s anything worth looking for. Apparently had the engine replaced under diesel gate warranty at 110k. Now sits around 200k.

How did it go, did you pick it up? I found a 14 A6 with 43k km (26.7k miles), from an Audi dealer. Looking for the same thing as the OP, anything to watch out for? Extended emissions warranty just expired, unfortunately.

Yep, I got it. At that mileage, there shouldn’t be anything you need to worry about. Seems like these cars have less problems than other TDIs. Injectors need to be re-ringed every 100k. You absolutely need to tune out the egr before it soots up your intake and valves, regardless of mileage.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I am flying down to pick it up 300kms away on Monday, and have a DPF delete kit all fabricated up for pickup on the drive home. Ha! As soon as that's installed it'll get it Stage 2 tuned with a dynamic EGR tune from Malone (EGR in service til the engine warms up, then it closes), just because I live in a cold climate. TCU tune as well, of course.
I also have a 14 Q5 TDI with the same engine and transmission which my wife drives, and its been reliable for the 3 years we had it. I am not familiar with getting the injectors re-ringed. I'll look into that; the Q5 is at 150k km and maybe it is due. Do you have any insight? How has your A6 been so far? Any mods done or planned?

I put the delete pipe on it today and Stage 2+ ECU and TCU by Oakes. EGR delete kit yesterday (full delete not just block offs), re-ringed my injectors since they were making ‘black death’, and did a full soot removal of the intake after the egr delete. it has aftermarket mufflers. next up: carplay unit, two 10’s in the trunk, and a transmission fluid and filter change.

Check out the facebook group. WAY more information and people on there. you can also see a ton of pictures and whatnot from me and others. find me on Facebook. Daniel Minton. my picture is my RS6 Dash

Sounds good bud, I frequent that facebook group as well. It's a great source of information. You kept your DPF? I'm assuming they do testing where you live? I mean, I will only be doing offroad driving once its deleted, of course. I'm going to wait for RSnav to come out with their S5 variant in a few months. The RSnav S4 12" in the Q5 is amazing. I cant decide if I want a 12.3" in the A6, or do a 9" flip out screen like factory. I'm contemplating doing the transmission fluid just due to age, not mileage. I was also thinking of an intercooler upgrade, to upgrade to Malone stage 2.5. Wagner seem so expensive, though! Darkside seems to be better value.

I haven’t seen the 12” IRL. the flip out screen is pretty neat though. And no, my dpf is getting sold as soon as i find the time to take some pictures and list it on ebay. no testing in most counties within the great state of Texas. In fact, starting 2025 no emissions tests in Texas on any cars.

The intercooler doesn’t seem to add much in the way of performance. Darkside installed it on a test 3.0 TDI A5 and adjusted their tune. got something like 5hp and 8 ft/lb of torque. Not worth the hassle to me, unless you’re ready to put a $2000 turbo and a $2000 set of piezo injectors in. Which is the next step of upgrades mechanically.

I think water/meth injection would be better for treating heat-soak after being rough on it. Or even using windshield washer nozzles to spray water on the existing intercooler.

I wish there was some middle ground of either keeping say- the stock turbo or moving to a $2200 turbo.

In the meantime, it seems like I’ve unfortunately run out of meaningful mechanical upgrades sub-$2000

Interesting, you've done your research! I was thinking of upgrading the intercooler as Malone recommends it for their stage 2.5 tune of the 3.0L TDI. I loaded it and tried it out in our Q5 with the stock intercooler as we have low ambient temperatures this time of year and it definitely feels zippier than the stage 2 tune. Feeling that extra power is addictive, I want more! They recommend I don't use the 2.5 tune in Summer though without a larger intercooler. Maybe not worth the $$$ as you said, as real gains are realized with a turbo and injector upgrade. Good discussion.
