A proactive Dealership...?

So I just got a letter from the local dealership stating that they are holding an "Informational Diesel Seminar" next week. One day only at 5:30 PM.

Dealer principles, "their"? diesel ambassador, VW specialist and staff will be on hand to help with entire claims process, or answer any questions you may have. Snacks and lite fare!

Not sure if this is a sell, or actually a local shop trying to help the locals...?...

Thinking of going just to sample the dealerships pulse on this process as I'm scheduled to bring back the car there next week.

Anyone else get a letter like this?...

This is actually refreshing to hear. I am sure there are 10s of thousands of people that are very ill-informed on this matter. I would assume that the general population (that aren't on this thread) have hardly a clue as to what is going on. Feel out the dealership if you'd like. I think you should go to the seminar. See what's going on. If they start doing some sales pitch, or have multiple sales reps approach people after the meeting, call them out on it. That would be wrong, and if what I read is correct, against the rules of the settlement.

my local dealer had 2 sessions with free food. I didn't go. Honestly they are probably less informed than most on here

The VW dealer in Dublin, OH had three or 4 such sessions. They sent me postcards inviting me to attend, but I didn't go. I'm planning on selling mine back in 2018, so I'm sure that everything about the process will be widely known by then.

But I do give them credit for at least trying.

Yea it's an effort, an effort to sell you a new car....

My dealership hasnt done anything, before I bought my replacement I asked them to look for what I wanted and let me know. They did nothing...

"There is no such thing as a free meal", they want something in return.

I like the idea of organizing a crowd to attend. Maybe we could do a mannequin challenge? ;)

Imagine you were a VW dealer and you watched as dozens of former customers walked out the door with cash in hand (sort of)? Imagine you are a dealer and read this forum and see all the questions and problems posed here? What would you do?

My dealer had one session with free dinner. It was delicious. There was a VWOA rep who knew his stuff that was answering questions. I didn't learn anything new but there were hundreds there that did. They gave away gifts and had a raffle for one of those fancy coolers. I didn't win. Since then they have called me to see how things were going and see if I needed anything. I gave them my list of used vehicles I'm looking at, none of which they had in stock. Hey, if they can find me what I'm looking for, why not do business with them again.

Yeah, not everybody reads these forums or keeps up with the news. I think it's a dealer being smart and capitalizing on a bad situation. There's nothing wrong with that. People will learn new things and get free food, and be left with perhaps a more positive view of that dealership. Think about it. People are posting here day in and day out about how the dealerships are doing nothing to win them over and how they are walking away from the brand. This dealership and ones like it are trying to elicit some goodwill and educate the potential repeat customers before they walk away from VW. The ultimate goal, of course, is to make another sale for VW. Nothing wrong with that, as long as the info they give in the meetings is valid...and the food isn't tainted. ;)

Well, the diesel meeting at the local shop actually went off pretty good.
The crowd (~30-40) went pretty easy on the host. And at one point the owners got a round of applause for being one of the few dealerships to do "something"/ "anything" for the locals.
The principles, VW district or regional manager and the "closing settlement specialist" were out in front. They started with pretty rudimentary info as to how it all started, were it is and where they think it's going.
They (for better or worse) gave their opinion as to what to do after seeing how it's turning out for most owners. Go for the buyback was their take on it.
A few points taken away from tonight's program:
- New York State did not take any settlement monies, which means if there is no fix, there is no grandfathering your vehicle in this state. No registration if no fix is approved.
That's when they came out and recommended to take the buy back. (They did not seem to have a lot of faith in an upcoming fix it appeared).
- the district or regional manager (can't remember what his title was) reiterated what the principal said regarding condition of car, that which seems to have a lot of debate on other threads... basically from their mouths - the example given was, take the back seats out before brining the car in, we do not care. As long as it runs. They pretty much laughed at what they thought they'd see coming back... and yet, shortly after that statement said that no Tdi will be crushed...!
I wanted to ask were that info came from but held back. Because if you can strip car and their not crushing...doesn't make sense. Especially when they said many of these cars will be resold shortly...
As a bonus, the "closing settlement specialist" (official name) actually seemed on the ball. Went up and introduced myself after the meeting, told her that I'd be in next week. She made sure I had everything set and said she'd have all paperwork ready. 20 mins tops.
I asked about how some seem to be getting checks differing from what had been promised. Mileage discrepancies was her answer. If you've opted for a check, as long as your under the mileage you stated, any more owed will be mailed. Over and the check is destroyed and you set up another date. Eft and it's fixed either way. She seemed pretty confident that there would be no hiccups on her side...
Next Wednesday will tell all.

If there's no fix, they can't re-sell them, which it seems that they think they'll be no fix, but they say they are going to be resold. Guess they want to sell you a brand new car.

Hints where in the air, Yet The principle bit his tongue on that...
It was amazing how little the majority knew.
But there where some die hards in the audience, one with almost 20 tdis under his belt, one guy with 28 VWs.
Two "older" ladies got a little vocal, they did not want to give up their Tdis! One said she's going back to running her late 90s tdi.
